Default Fuel Leaking

Ok so I need some help from the more experienced riders. We started out this Memorial Day weekend to do a ride that would total some 800 miles on my new '06 Classic. We had stoped to get some lunch and so my friend needed some fuel so I got some also. I was on 1/2 tank and was trying to be cautious was all. While we were having a smoke I noticed something leaking from the underneath the L passenger floorboard. I was like hmmm that can't be me it's only got 800 miles on it. So I moved up some 3 feet so watch it again. Sure as $hit I saw it again. It was gas! I called my dealer and he informed me that I was a MORON (not really but that's how I felt) He said that I must have over filled the tank. He said that there is a line inside that you're not supposed to fill past but I still can't see it. Can somebody tell me where this INVISABLE line is. Thanks in advance. I think my pride is hurt more than anything.

Just don't stop and park the bike right after you filled it up!!! I did that once, and someone told me my SG was leaking fuel too, I told them no it wasn't that it was just leaving its mark, then told them that Ijust filled it.

Rest easy USN....

That is common. If you look closley inside the area where the gas cap screws into the tank, you'll see a little hole. That hole has a piece of hose attached to it for just that reason.

If, by chance, you say on the bike and held it up right, (not leaning over on the side stand) while filling the tank "to get it full" then say.... moved the bike away from the pump and parked it on the stand or just parked it there on the side stand.... it will almost always leak some fuel out that overflow line. Actually, it happens more frequently if you start it right after gassing up and then turn it off reall quick. This is because the fuel pump will pressurize the the tank, then when you turn off the bike and park it on the side stand, that pressure effectively "pumps fuel back out that hole.

Moral to all that... unless you are ready to ride away from the pump and put some miles on (hence burning soe fuel and lowering the level in the tank), do not try to fill the tank all the way up to the top. You ESPICALLY don;t wanna do this right before you go park your bike in your garage. Trust me on that one!!!

BTW - congrats on the new ride & welcome to the site!

Welcome to the forum from London, Ontario.

Just to add one more thing...the gas is cool from being stored in the ground. When you put it in your warm/hot tank it expands, adding to the problem.

OK two more things... It is not a good practice to stay on the bike while filling it. If anything went wrong, you could not move away quickly.
