Default Road King oil leak

I have a 2005 RK and for a while I have been wiping oil off the underside of the inner primary and oil pan. Its not a lot but enough to make it wet after a few hundred miles. Now at this point I am not real concerned but I am trying to track it down. Today I noticed oil around a bolt in the side of the trans case. Its the torx ( T50) head bolt on the side of the transmission case right under the trans top cover. And yes its tight. My question is Is there oil in there or tranny oil that could come from the bolt in question or what"s the deal?

Is it engine oil or gear lube? You can tell from the smell providing that there is gearlube in trans. I have a trans leak from the output shaft seal that drips right at the bottom of primarycover by the drain plug. Its not a real problem as it only drips a small amount. As far as oil from that particular bolt, would think it would be gear lube. But not sure.

Shifter shaft seal is notorius for leaking, especially of you hit the heel part hard when shifting, like banging it !!!

There are 4 bolts that mount the tranny to the crank case. The gasket on this tranny to crank case is known to leak and you will see the oil seeping around the the mated surface. You may see weeping or sweating on the top and if you look down in between the primary and the tranny housing at the bottom left bolt you may see some oil on it (motor oil). Clean this area with some gumout and wash it down. Now pay attention to this area over the next couple hundred miles and see how much oil accumulates. If it just sweats and leaves a drop on the bolt I mentioned, forgetaboutit, it's won't hurt anything.

I dont even "bang"mine(the bike!)and I will be having the seal replaced a 3rd. time soon with 43000 miles.

Best thing to do is clean the engine very good and watch for the leak.

I have an 05 as well. To me, that looks like more than a little leak. Redline fluids make it easy to figure out what' leaking.
Hope you figure out your issue

That looks like a shifter seal leak to me. It's in all the right places.

But, an 05 is old enough to have weeping, especially if it isn't being ridden much. If you see some weeping on the top of the case between the starter and cylinders, then your caskets are aging and becoming brittle. Not a big deal. But it would be a good time to switch to non-synthetic oil. And don't worry that you are hurting the engine. Synthetic oil only makes the engine a touch more efficient; non-synthetic oil doesn't hurt the engine at all.

This is an old thread, and we don`t know what year and model bike is being discussed....

Xrodgers56:

Start a new thread, and tell us the issue and the model and year bike.

Tagging on to an old thread like this makes it difficult to keep track of who`s problem is being discussed.
