Out on the bike today, bike suddenly gives a split second sputter but keeps on running. About 10 seconds later, bike dies as I'm going down the road. Motor dies, but everything else is working fine. So I pull over, turn the key off, turn it back on and it starts back up. I make it home with no more problems at all.
Now in the garage I go to start the bike again, and it makes a weird sound, and now absolutely nothing is working on the bike.........no lights, radio, ignition, nothing at all.........dead as a fart. I check all the fuses, they are fine. I check the maxi-fuse, it's fine as well. I check the battery, still putting out like 13.5 volts at the terminals.
I have absolutely no idea what it could be, or what caused it?
Anyone have any ideas?
Bike is a 2005 Ultra Classic with 40000 miles on it, never had any problems at all for the past 4 years.
I'm thinking stator could be shorting out? Or could the starter be shorting out?
Get the voltmeter out and check for continuity to and from your ignition switch and other areas in the starting circuitry for starters.. No pun intended. Sounds like a grounded wire to allow things to work and then all of a sudden nothing.
Also check to see if your kill switch is working properly with the voltmeter. Make sure that the contact is open and closing correctly on the kill switch with the voltmeter. Of course this may not explain why you don't have ANY dash lights or radio.

Sounds like a definite electrical gremlin Steve. I'd start with Ultra's suggestions and go from there. Been there and done that with some really weird electrical **** and ended up being the battery DESPITE it testing out ok. Go figure!
Well I found the problem.................negative battery terminal had come loose, AGAIN!!
I think it's time for a new battery, 4+ years on this one, and the threads are stripped out on the negative side from past issues with the samething happening.
What's the best battery? Who sells them? How much?
