I need to replace my stock bars due to the pain I get in the back of my shoulder everytime I ride, I was told that apes will releive that pain. I sat on a bike with 16's and my hands were level with my shoulders I don't want attitude I just want comfort, that felt really good, I was also told 14's, I am getting ready to order them and I would like to know any opinions out there on this subject. Thanks
Let me tell you of my $1000.00 error. I put 16.5's on my Road King and that lasted about a year. Yes, my hands were level with my shoulders but the outsides of the palms of my hands went bye bye after about an hour. Granted, I looked like BillyBadA__ but it was not worth it. I do have those bars for sale goin cheap for anyone taller than 5'11" and wants the attitude. I'd go lower than 14's, say 10.5 IMHO. You still get the Ape hanger look but without the pins and needles and it will keep your back erect.

I guess everyone is different.I had 12.5 chubbys on my previous fatboy and now have 16"s on my RKC.Never had any problems with any of them.Been on a few longer rides and they were very comfortable.some of my buddys with non-apes bars complained somewhat but not me nor the other guys with apes.Personally i wouldnt have a bike without them, but thats just me.Everyone is different.
I have been told both sides and I am still looking either way. I wouldn't roll the bars forward, I would bring them back towards me more, I did look at the barons big johnson bars they have a set made for the roadking and they are under 200 and no wire replacement they are supposed to be ergonomically built for riders with shoulder, and back pain. Anyone hear of these bars
THe other replies are correct. It will all depend on what you deem as comfortable because everyone is different size and has different riding styles. I have a 05 RK Custom with 18" 1-1/4" Bars and I'm 6'2". Ape's are just comfortable for me. Low bars like beach bars hurt my elbows for some reason. Never had my hands fall asleep or anything with the apes. My hands right now are slightly over my shoulders but they are comfortable for me. I have been on a few 1000 miles in a day trips with no shoulder or hand problems at all. Good luck, big choice.
thanks for all the advice, it just gives me more to think about. Getting the 10000 service this week and then the bars, so I will figure it out and take pics, again thanks
16" Wild1's here and I'm 5'8". A healthy mix of attitude and comfort. Also pushed 'em forward a bit, I dig that style. Just rode a 4500km trip in 6 days and no complaints. First experience with apes and I already know I'll never go back.
