Default High oil temp?

good evening all, im new to the forum and I had a quick question about my oil temp. i've got an 09 street glide with about 1600 miles on it that i just picked up in may. im switched over to full synth at my 1000 mile and so far all i have done to it engine wise is add a set of rush slip-ons with 2" baffles. anyway i was riding on the highway the other day at about 75-80mph for a good hour and a half. when i stopped i checked my oil temp and it was reading about 260. this is my first harley so im still learing as i go but this seems a little high to me. is this normal or is this something i should look in to? any advise would be appreciated.

You are running full synthetic oil and it will hold up to those temperatures easily. HD runs them lean from the factory which increases temperatures.

If your checking the temp at the dipstick that would be a normal temp after a ride like that.

Will probably put an oil cooler on the '09 this winter. I will help on long interstate rides, not much help in traffic.

Yeah perfectly normal to run that hot. An oil cooler will help cool it down but it still runs hot, it's just the nature of the beast.

Just had the dealer perform the 1000 service with synthetic oils and added the HD oil cooler. Before the service the oil temps was averaging about 245*. After the service I rode 55 miles and at the 22 mile mark temp was 229* and 55 mile mark temp was 230*. Not bad I guess.

Make sure you put one on with a thermostat. Since you live in MI, you won't want it kicking in during the cooler temps.

Thanks for the replies, guess i wont worry too much about it then. I thought about adding an oil cooler this winter maybe but wasnt sure if i needed it. Does HD make one with a thermostat? One more question, if i upgrade my air filter and add a fuel management system will this also help to curb my oil temp a little? i've been looking into getting a ridemaxx and upgrading to a K&N element and possible a new intake all together.

Yes. HD makes a oil cooler with t/stat. Thats what I have on mine and works fine. Adding a F/M systems with A/C and pipes will help also. The combination of syn oils, cooler, F/M, A/C, all together helps with cooling. Manual says normal operation temp for the 09 is 230*.

Yeah, I checked mine the other day after a similar ride and it read 279. Air temp was mid to high 90s - I have Bub 7 slip-ons, ventilator A/C, PCV and run Mobile 1.

They get hot - may look into oil cooler also.
