I agree with the others, replace both your tyres. Old or not, I find that when tyres wear down to a certain point the last bit goes away fast, just like yours did. It is not unusual in my experience and has happened on a wide variety of bikes and types of tyre. So it seems there is nothing wrong - your tyre is telling you to replace it!

Thanks for all the input. Yeah, I was just wondering why it seemed to all of a sudden go bald. I had thought about putting tires on a month ago, but I figured since they didn't look too bad I might be able to get them through the end of the season. I thought that 9300 miles was a little low for tire life. Although my last 2 bikes were much smaller. One thing that was pointed out to me was that I more aggressive on the throttle than the previous owner was.
I decided on the Dunlop Elite 3, bought 2 of them. $300 installed (incl new tubes) I thought that was a pretty good price.

I finally put on Elite 3's and have about 8500 miles on them. No real sign of wear yet. I usually only get about 5-7,000 out of a rear tire. I would love to know the secret of getting over 10,000 out of a rear tire, I have tried different brands and keep my air pressure at 40 in the rear. Guess I must be really hard on tires, of course I ride over 3,000 miles a month.

It's because when rubber get's some age on it , it tends to harden up. When rubber gets hard it wears faster than normal. Besides that you should replace them anyhow just because of the age. (8 yrs ? wow)
