I have a 2001 EGC with just about 10,000 miles on the bike, and the tires are original. A month ago the tires looked hardly worn at all. I noticed yesterday that the rear tire is now bald. All the way around the tire it is flat and there is no tread about 2-3 inches wide. The edges of the tire still look hardly worn. The front tire also looks hardly worn too.
I don't do burnouts or lock up the tires. The tire pressure is at the proper level.
First I would like to know if this is normal. Is there a reason why only the rear tire would be bald?
Why did it seem to wear so fast? I did put 3000 miles on the bike in the last month.
Also, could I replace only the rear, or should I replace both at the same time?
Old tires, old rubber. No flex in the tread, so faster wear. Were you carring more total weight on the motorcycle than earlier?
10,000 miles is a little early for that much wear, but I have read of others that have worn the tires with fewer miles.
If the front tire is still good tread, no problem just doing the rear tire. I have replaced my back tire after 14,000 and still have fair tread on the front.
rear to front wear will be 2-1 or 3-1 depending on your acceleration practices. 10-12k is pretty normal on a stock touring rear. I normally get 12-13k on my ultra, but I drive like an old lady (except for the twisties). My current rear turned 14k today and still has 1-2k left. it has all been long distance hiway miles. 28k on the front (stock dunlops).

we have a winner..... 8 year old tires, that suddenly start getting used, aren't going to last.
Get yourself a set of new tires, and don't worry about it
replace your tires with elite3's a better dunlop tire that will increase your milage the are a little harder compound but ride good you should be able to get average of 18000 on them if you keep them inflated to 40psi
Because of the age of the tires you really should replace both. Read some of the threads about the Dunlop Elite 3 tires. People seem to think they are the hot setup.
