I'm one of the lucky ones here in Illinois without the helmet law. I choose not to wear one right now, but in the near future plan on getting a lightweight shorty.
I ride with a full face helmet 100% of the time. It took a while to find one I like, but it was worth the trouble. I wear a Shoei RF1000. It fits great, has great ventilation and is fairly quiet. I don't have much of a face, but I still use it all the time, and I don't want to mess it up.
I like to practice risk management. Besides the helmet, I always wear a jacket with armor in the elbows and shoulders, gloves, boots and Draggin Jeans (kevlar lined). I have ridden with this stuff since I bought the bike, and it feels natural and comfortable to me. I know there are no guarantees that any of this stuff will make a difference in an accident. I just like playing the percentages. I'm at the point in my life where I don't care if other people think I look like a dork.
I feel much better with a full face which I wear 100% of the time. I have tried others but hate the wind in my eyes for some reason. I'm seeing more baggers wearing full face helmets these days too for some reason. I'm in texas so the helmet is a shoei x-11 because that helmet moves the most air.
I am thinking about getting a 3/4 helmet but have not decided on one yet. Any thought or opinions on brands that are the most comfortable and least mushroom head looking?
