On the other hand r8rs4lf drilled his out and didn't notice a reduction in heat. I would imagine if you didn't have lowers you might not notice any change. Unless I get stuck in traffic I really don't notice any great amount of heat without lowers. With lowers it's pretty hot once the air temp gets over about 80F or so. I think it might be worthwhile to swap the headpipe and see how it is. I can always put the cat pipe back if CA actually follows through on their threat to start smog checking bikes.

Did "r8rs4lf" actually measure the heat with a sensor? Or did he use the "butt" sensor that some people dyno with?

Yes, I assumed that if you remove the headpipe, which has the cat in it, you're out of compliance. California has been threatening for years to start smog checking bikes but it hasn't happened as of yet. I've done the same thing with my BMW. It also has the cat in the headpipe which I've replaced with a Remus system. The one good thing is that it's no big deal to put it back to stock if the need arises. And no harm done. I'd really like to reduce the amount of radiated heat with lowers on and maybe changing out the headpipe might help.

You can however change the mufflers and still remain EPA/CARB emissions compliant. I have PDF flies from CARB proving that most Vance & Hines mufflers are still compliant as long as you use the stock head pipe.

No sensor here because it's really not that serious to me. I mostly did it to get the ovals to bark a little which, by my ear, it did. Maybe not all that much, but I can't go back and change it anyways. One would think the headpipe "would" be cooler without the catalyst in there.

my father in law and a buddy of his put the RUSH true duals on their FLs because they advertised heat reduction of around 300 degrees. both of them said they noticed a huge difference. so when i decided to put a full system on my street bob, i called rush and they informed me that they ceramic coat the inside and outside of all their head pipes. as soon as their dyna systems are out ill be putting a set on my bike along with a tuner and air cleaner. just my 2 cents.
