Slip-On Mufflers only
If you change the inlet or outlet to the engine (air cleaner or exhaust), you will allow more air into the engine, thus making the engine run leaner as it is using the same amount of fuel. However, if you have an O2 sensor, it basically sniffs the exhaust to determine the fuel/air ratio and correct as needed by dumping in more or less fuel. So, for minor changes it should be OK. However, the stock CPU can only change it so much as it was designed to run with the stock exhaust, so the software parameters are very narrow. Basically, it might try to richen it up some, but if you put an air cleaner and full system on it will still be much too lean.
If you don't have O2 sensors, then your fuel map will not be changed at all by change the air cleaner or exhaust.
So, yes, he should be good with some mild slipons. But, I would recommend paying close attention to the temp of the engine for awhile afterward. If he puts them on, and the oil temp jumps 20 dregrees or there is some bluing on the head pipes, then put a PC or VH FP on there.
