The vehicle you are hauling it with will add more protection than you think. Much more than if you were riding it.

Check out your tow rig!! does it have adequate mudflaps?? Your rig will be throwing up the rocks, mud and grime that hit your bikes. A friend of mine went to an RV place and bought one of those long "hair" type flap curtains and uses it only when he tows bikes in an open trailer, attaches it to the bumper.

Make sure you either have low mud flaps on the truck or make up a stone guard for the front of the trailer. If anything kicks up, it will be from your cage. DEFINITELY don't cover the bikes in transport.
