Default Cam for bagger...

No flaming, I have spent the last week reading thousands of post about cams.... need some clarity.

I have 2003 FLHTCUI, 95", 35k mi, SE203, FatCat... time to replace the tensioners. This is my daily driver, 90% riding 1-up.

Bought ported heads about 4yrs ago without doing enough research (QHP from eBay) for what I was trying to do...
So, while open, want to put better cams and geared (like the whirring sound) and use the heads.
When I bought the heads, the porter told me to use the RedShift 575 or SS570....

I was thinking based on reading on forums that I would use the Woods 6 or maybe the HQ0039..
Seems from the specs that the SS570 would be the most low-end torque cam because of the wider LSA. All have about the same lift and similar duration. Maybe not much difference in any of them that anyone could really be noticed.

Am I understanding wrong?

Looking for input and advice.

Thanks..

The woods cams are an excellent choice. You can call Bob and he can help you. I used a set of S&S 585 gear driven cams in a 103 for awhile and it pulled forever. That set of cams had approximatley 1000 miles on them and I decided to go bigger build. If you want to save some money there available.
Cant go wrong with woods though. Check out my sig its an animal, my power comes in hard at 2200 all the way through 5500 and holds to redline.
Just take your time and talk with as many experts as possible. Your cam is the heart beat of the engine and there is alot to consider for your riding style.
Those heads you have might not be worth using if you dont know what they are. You should probably just send your heads in for a rework, or send in the new heads for evalutation of chamber size and everything you need to know. If you just bolt them on and the chamber size is wrong you will have a serious problem.

Sorry for the long post, there is so much to matching the right parts together, just take your time and do the research and make sure you are doing whats right for you.

Good luck and keep us posted

If your heads are setup to handle 575 lift cams, you might want to look at the Woods TW-5......it is a great torque cam with a higher lift. But you will need to set the compression at or around 10.5:1 to make them work right. To do that, you'll need to have your heads CC'ed and milled and also measure your deck height so you can know for sure what you are working with.

Woods TW-6 is another great choice, and is a bolt-in .510 lift cam, it likes 10:1 compression.

Do you know if there's a high lift spring kit installed in the heads? That may be a factor in cam selection.

Have you though of using the S.E. 211 cam with less lift but more duration?

S&S 570's would be my first choice.

All, thanks for the input so far....and thanks for the flow #s Dewey.

Will definitely cc heads and measure the decks hght before assembly. Will make sure it is correct for cams..... but here is a question

P/N LIFT OPN CLS LSA
37G 0.510 18 38 103
54G 0.555 16 42 103.5
6G 0.510 20 40 101
39G 0.580 20 36 101
SS570 0.570 20 40 103.8

SE203 0.510 18 36 100.8 * * current cam

Looks like the 203 and the 39G are nearly the same -- except for lift, 14% increase with the 39s ?
Looks like the 6G and SS570 are the same -- except the LSA is wider on the SS which would bring stinger low end...?
Looks like the 54G -- from the numbers -- give the broadest torque curve.... wide LSA

Of course, I don't know Jack......which is why I asking experts.

Appreciate any clarification.

Thanks.
