Does anyone know if the baffles in the V&H basic slip-ons can be changed out to make them louder. Dont want to run without the baffles, did it for one day and the sound was pretty rough not to mention losing bottom end torque. The baffles in there now have a really thick wrap around them, was just wondering what I could do to make them louder, without having to buy different slip-ons??????
I had those on the '93 and they got louder over time, due to the packing wearing out. I re-packed them with different wrapping and never was able to duplicate the sound they had when new. So I'm guessing if you took the packing all the way off, or just went with a thinner wrap, you probably can get the sound you're after. Or, wait.
Another option would be Thunder City baffles, I think they're about $80/pair. Feedback indicates they are louder than the Vance & Hines baffles.

I agree, after a 2k miles or so, my V&H Slip-ons got louder!
I have almost 5000 miles on them now and the packing seems to be holding up pretty good and the sound is pretty much the same as when I put em on. When you say take the packing off I take it you just put the metal baffle back in there. By doing this am I still going to have somewhat of the back pressure that I need to keep the bottom end torque???

I would think that after 5000 miles the packing would be all but gone.
I havent ever heard of someone wanting their basics louder!! As far as I know V&H dont have other baffle options as the basics are the loudest slip on they make.
One solution - Get a 124". My basics have gotten complaints while riding past a graveyard. I rode my bike without ear plugs once. Just once. I have 6000 miles on my basics now and they are as loud as the day they were fitted, so I dont expect yours to get louder.
Get some serious work done, more compression and more agressive cams will make her louder. There is nothing sadder than a loud bike that would loose a drag race with a Prius....
