Anyone ever have the compensator nut come loose and chew up the sproket? Fired my 04 uc up for a ride and noticed a ratting sound coming from the primary cover area. i rode it 25 miles to the dealer. The mechanic checked it out and new exactly what it was. He said it happens all the time with nut coming loose and if I would have rode it any further, I would have had major engine damage. It only took him 2 hours and $458.00 dollars to fix. The sproket was $277.00. The bike has 42,000 miles.

mine was fixed under warranty, but it seems to be a fairly common problem. sux that the moco has not addressed this thru a TSB or some other way.
Something is wrong here. On the 06 models, there is only about 1/8" between the head of the nut and the outter primary cover. If the nut backs out only a couple of turns at the most, it will begin chewing up the primary and sound like someone is in there with a hammer.
Yep really sucks. In a way the moco has addressed this with a design change in 07 or 08, if I remember right. But didn't really fix it.
Used to be (don't have manual handy) comp nut was torqued to I believe 140 ftlb.
Now the torque has changed, and now you add x # of degrees of turn on the nut, past the torque setting. Use blue loctite (light) but you could use red, just harder to remove.
I really need to keep my manuals closer to the computer. Or fix my worn out memory.
