I have just under 10K miles on the original D402's and they both have between 3/32 and 4/32 tread left. I try to be pretty gentle, without a lot of quick starts or hard breaking, and my tread wear seems to be about average. I can understand some guys getting less miles by running harder. But some guys claim 15K + miles on a set, and I wonder how do they do it? I'm planning on replacing the tires in the Spring anyhow, but how far worn do most folks let their tires go before replacement?
I've got about 12,500 on mine now/ they measure 2 and 3/32 in most places, a little better on the rear. I kept them properly inflated all the time and think I got good wear out of them. But I just got Avon Venoms in, so I'm giving them a try since I heard such good things about their handling ability. We'll see how much milage I get out of them.
I think tire wear is like gas mileage, some get better than others. A lot of variables to both such as load, solo, 2up,interstate, back roads, easy starts and stops, can't let anyone beat you to the next stop and of course tire pressure, alignment etc., etc.
Many people lie and many people don't. I run mine till almost the wear bars unless I have a long distance trip coming up then I change sooner. I used to get 2rears to 1 front. That was approx. 12000 to 13000 on rear and 25000 on fronts. My new 09' looks like I'll go longer on the rear and sooner on the fronts. Currently 15000 on rear and front replaced at 12000 due to the cupping issue. rear looks to have 3000 to 5000 more miles in it.
I hope that helps you.
I"m one of the guys that gets great mileage off my 402's and not really sure why I do and others don't. I ride 95% solo and 80% of my riding is on the interstate, maybe that helps. Don't really know.
I'm on the other side of the spectrum... I only got about 5000 each out of both 402's that I have had on my bike. Last time around I went with Elite 3... I guess time will tell if they hold up better or not, but I know it handles better than the O.E. ones.
