I went with the Garmin Nuvi 500 for about $250 it is waterproof simple to operate, and has the added feature that you can change it to topographical with a touch. To some this may mean nothing but I am an outdoorsman and love the feature. Beware it is not bluetooth compatible but I just need it occassionally for directions and am good with the visual only. To each his own. Works great!
I have the Garmin NUVI 550. Waterproof, easy to operate even with gloves.
Heres how I have mine mounted. first pic is just the ram ball mount, 2nd pic is with the unit
+1 for the Garmin Nuvi 500 and the Ram Mount. Waterproof and no problems so far. Got it for $175 at Best Buy. Got the mount from Mount Guys. The Nuvi 500/550 are getting very hard to find at a discount.
I agree with honestbob. I have the TomTom Rider, got it online from Wallyworld for around $360 plus shipping. Needed it in a hurry for a road trip and got it before I expected it.
Works great and saved some $$$$.
I have a Garmin GPSMap76CSx that is excellent. Supports turn by turn routing and also works on the boat with the blue water series charts. Insane amount of memory supported by use of micro sd chips. Water proof and has some cool sensors like magnetic compass and barometric pressure if you are out hiking. It is listed in the marine section of the Garmin site.
I like it because it works on the bike, in the cage, on the boat, and (with topos installed)on foot in the woods.
Screen is a little small but a small tradeoff for what I need in versatility.
Is there a monthly charge for connection with any GPS unit? Or does the price of the unit cover the connection indefinately?
Garmin allows you to update the map in your unit for free during a specified time period.
After that there is a fee for upgrading. The also have a one time lifetime update fee but it's your choice to do so or not.
I went with the Zumo 550 had the cash and when i used my other garmin out of the truck it didnt seem to like the vibrations. I bought mine from Dell and used a few hundred bucks of dell dollars i had laying around then downloaded all the H-D POI's. The one from dell came with a bike mount and a car mount as well as all the cables.

Speaking about the Zumo 550, Costco has them now for $599.99, online;
