Yes, it must be burned as "data". If it is, and the stereo won't read it, it's probably burned at a rate that the MC stereo can't read. A lot of auto CD players have the exact same problem. All he should have to do is slow down the burn rate of his CD burner (software function). My Harman Kardon works fine with CD's burned at 8X. A quick Google search will verify my answer. Take care, ride safe.
iTunes is also excellent, and its free for both Mac and PC. Regardless of what format the songs are in (CD or MP3) when you do a burn with iTunes, you tell it what format to create the disk in and it just does it. It converts the songs on the fly as it burns if it needs to, so you don't have to do any song conversions yourself ahead of time. Seamless.
