Does a lot of stuff and it's free
In the past I have used several different types and maker.
Now media monkey is all I will use.
convert any format to any format
Does volume balance
burn several albums instead of adding each song, media monkey will mix them before burning automatically.
Does music only

Yes, it must be burned as "data". If it is, and the stereo won't read it, it's probably burned at a rate that the MC stereo can't read. A lot of auto CD players have the exact same problem. All he should have to do is slow down the burn rate of his CD burner (software function). My Harman Kardon works fine with CD's burned at 8X. A quick Google search will verify my answer. Disc needs to be closed at the end of burn. On my burner, you have to selct that option or it won't play anywhere except a computer.

iTunes is also excellent, and its free for both Mac and PC. Regardless of what format the songs are in (CD or MP3) when you do a burn with iTunes, you tell it what format to create the disk in and it just does it. It converts the songs on the fly as it burns if it needs to, so you don't have to do any song conversions yourself ahead of time. Seamless.
