Mtn,
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you want the apes to improve comfort and not your "image". I have a 2010 EG Classic and am interested in this thread and what you ultimately do because I have a bad back and would like to improve comfort via a handlebar change, too.
Have you considered the HD Touring Pull Back Handlebar? What are the pros/cons vs apes?
Here is a slideshow that shows the relationship between 1) rider reach, 2) 8.5" Harley Bars and 3) 12.5" Wild1s 12.5" Chubbies. Relationship is similar whatever bars you install. The increased comfort with higher/ pulled back barsis amazing. Its just a quick study on how the reach changes as handlebars are rotated relative to the rider reach.
Padrel, I'm going to change to the Kromewerks Sweepers +2. You should look at the posts on those and the Cubby 575's. Both of these give about 2" higher and 2" more pull back. Supposed to relieve back tenstion and a better riding position. Lot's of good info if you search on these. These won't give you the mini ape look, but if you are looking for more comfort, one of these should do the trick.
My Cusin is about 5 9" he just put 16" on his Electra Gluide & he thinks they are hella confortable. Im about 5 11" & road his Bike & I thought they were confortable.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't mean to hijack Mtn's thread, but this has been very informative. Would love to see some pics when you get the Kromewerks Sweepers installed.
Ripper's Cyclesmith's look like they'd do the trick, too.
14" Wild1 bagger bars on my FLHX. I'm 6' tall. I didn't get the memo about apes being a short lived thing! I've had apes on every bike I've owned since the 70's. As far as control, not an issue for me. Comfort is great as well.
