Default 255 cams without doing the 103? comments please

Okay here’s what I’m thinking.
I am considering putting in 255 cams into a stock 96 motor.
I know I will need an Air Cleaner up grade, SE Race Tuner down load and some time on a dyno.

From what I’ve read this is actually better than doing the 103 kit.
Any comments about this setup just doing 255 cams without doing the 103?

For me it was about costs
I am happy with the results (see results under my sig)
Could I get better results w/ different
CAMS - yes
103 - yes
FuelMoto Setup - yes

But like I said for the cost the SE255 CAM only is working for me, your results may vary.

My builder told me that unless you are going to do head work, larger throttle body, etc you might as well just do the cams and not the 103. He had an Ultra in his shop that he was dynoing for the dealer because they had just put the SE 103 kit with SE heads in. He said that it only made 9 more hp than mine and 3 more lbs of torque. He was laughing because I had $900 with dyno tune in mine and the guy with the Ultra spent $3500 (for dealer installed kit) without dyno tune. He said is 9hp and 3lbs of torque worth $2600?

Do you have access to a GOOD wrench you trust and would steer you in the right direction regardless of whether he made $1 or $10,000 off of you and GOOD dynotuner? If so, go talk to him/them.

It really is about what you want and how much you want to spend.

I went with the se255 cams only. I did add the PCV with AT

I have no idea about what the numbers might be and not that interested. I know I got what I wanted.
Better power in 6th gear
Engine works less to maintain power
I can run with the 103's and not be left. A stock 103; built 103 no

I did not want my heads pulled, not yet any way.
Mpg is a little better than with the stock cams and the fuelpak
Think of it like this, if the cams only doesn't do it then it will cost less to go 103

I tour a lot with my wife-2 up. The cams only do just fine. Since I have the 5 gallon tank mpg matters. I hate stopping every 140 miles or so

255 cams are the best bang for the buck! I did mine myself for $330. The bike runs great and pulls like a tractor. Jamie at FM sent me a new map for my PC III when I did the change. I put 24,000 miles on my bike this year, 8,000 since the cam swap. I now have 37,000 miles on it. I don't plan to trade it and when it needs the upper end refreshed sometime in the next two years the way I ride, I will order the 103 jugs and pistons then.

My theory is do a little at a time on the upgrades and enjoy the bike feeling like a different bike each time. It kind of curbs that desire to trade IMHO. Besides, it doesn't cost that much more to do each step at different times, well it doesn't me because I do all my own work. I love to wrench on my bikes and have since my first bike 39 years ago.

I will, I just wanted to know if I am going in the right direction or not.

What I meant by the "cams only are better than the 103", I meant bang for the buck.
I don't see any need to do a 103 without doing the heads also. That is way more money than just doing the cams. The heads alone are more money than the 103 kit.

Here's another one!!!!!!! This same question is asked at least twice a week. Use the archives there is enough information on this pitiful set of cams to fill a book.

This sounds like I'm on the right track. It will cost me a lot more because I'm having it done (labor), tuner and dyno time. Thanks for the push though.
