I think the person paying for and riding the bike should make the decision.

In the touring section everyone prefers an Ultra, in the Softail section, I'm sure it will be the opposite. Get what you want.
At last the voice of reason. Both are huge bikes capable of cross-country runs, much less day touring. And any Harley has plenty of options for bigger seats, more wind protection, etc. Only clear advantage of the touring family is better brakes imo. Harley should add the ABS Brembos to the Softail lineup.

Buy the one that speaks to you.

Umm suspention travel? Touring vs softail, frame to frame the touring ride will provide much less fatigue over the long run.
Ive owned both, my current softail isnt fun for much more than a 100 mile jaunt...granted its not a HD but works on the same frame principal.

I thought about that having owned a Softail myself, but figured it was pretty subjective. Some people like the way softails ride, I've got a friend who racks up big miles on his.

I think it all depends on what you'll be using the bike for. Bar hopping? Day trips no longer than 150 miles? Profiling? Maybe a softtail platform would fit your style. For longer distance riding when you might see north of 300 miles in a day, ride two up, and look forward to twists in the road? You can't beat the touring platform. My friend and I took a trip down Coastal 1 to San Diego from Monterey California. We were both one up. He's an excellent rider on a Heritage Softtail Classic (probably slightly better than me) and I'm on a 07 Street Glide with 13" Works shocks. He couldn't keep up when the roads turn twisty. Profiling is nice, his bike has a classic look, but I like the performance capabilities of the touring platform. To each their own though.

Exactly. Equal or slightly less capeable rider and the touring bike runs away and hides on curvy mountain roads. I've had both and couldn't believe the difference.

Thanx for the offer. I'm gonna be renting one soon and taking my wife on a three hour ride. I think we'll be going to Ravine Gardens in Palatka sometime in March.

2up long distance riding Utlra all the way! My wife & I did 1,200 miles on my Nightrain over the summer and it sucked; I had to "un-slam" it +2", attach the windshield, put the 2-up seat & sissy bar on and buy detachable saddlebags along with gel pads for the seat. Even after all that the it was still an uncomfortable ride; especially when the other couple was "kicked back" on thier E Glide. Here's a pic of my "bagger train".
