Default Speedometer sticks

I have an '02 FLHTC. Recently I noticed that my speedometer was not functioning properly. The most it was registering was 45 mph even at speeds of 75 - 80 mph. The funny thing was that it only did this on the first leg of a ride, meaning that when I first started on a ride, the speedo would malfunction, however when I stop for gas or a break and start off again, the speedo was back to functioning properly. I know it is functioning properly because I have verified speeds with my riding partner.

I have pulled the instrumentation fuse, cleaned it but to no avail. Speedo still malfunctions on the first leg of the trip. It's always the first leg, never the second, third or later. I'm mystified.......

I would appreciate any ideas as to why this is happening.

If I remember correctly you might want to clean the CPS.

I had a 01 FLHTCU that did the same thing, Cruise control quit working too.
here is a possible fix for you.

Get down by the starter on the right side of the bike.

You will see a heavy black wire going to a sending unit (about 1/2 inch diameter) it is held in place with a single allen wrench bolt.(The sending unit is located between the rear jug and the starter, about an inch from of the starter).

remove the allen screw and Carefully rock the sending unit side to side while pulling up there is a O-ring that seals the sensor.

With the sending unit in your hand (don't unplug anything) look at the bottom for metal dust and chips. (there is a spinning magnet in the transmission that sends a signal to the sending unit you just removed)
Don't use any harsh spray cleaners,, just a clean paper towel,, wipe off the metal dust and gunk from the sending unit,,(don't drop any crap back into the sending unit opening)

Lightly oil the O-ring with oil (Engine oil preferred over silicone or WD) and re-install
the sending unit. (don't force it,,rock it back and forth, side to side gently so it slides back in) Hell this sound like **** for your bike.

Line up the bolt threads and tighten down. (you don't need to torque the $hit out of it)

Should fix your problem, your happy, bikes happy, and I need to go take a cold shower.
Good Luck.

Razer nailed it, if the fix doesn't work you'll need to buy a new speed sensor for about $65. Mine went south on my 01 RK at around 25000. The cleaning didn't work so I installed a new one and problem solved.
