Default Input on SE258 cam install?

I just purchased my first HD this past July 31st. I bought a brand new 2009 SG with chrome front end, laced wheels and California Kid Paint (already installed). Dealership was asking $24,999 for this bike until the 2010's came out and it dropped to $21,999. I thought I got a pretty good deal for a $3650 paint job that they already did the work with removing the sheet metal and sending back for paint. I now have 6300 miles on the bike and need to have a little more power going into this years riding season.

So after a little history on my bike I am needing some history on the SE258 cams. I have a buddy that was a certified HD tech and is now working on his own. He just removed a set of 258 cams from another bike and they have about 1000 miles on them. He is wanting $150 for the cams. I am going to assist on the install and didn't think the price was that bad for the cams.

I will also be installing a HD heavy breather and SERT. I am currently running RUSH slip-ons until I get the funds to add a 2 into 1 exhaust.

Does anyone see any issues with this set up or suggestions on other parts to consider? It is winter here in OHIO and I still have some time to think this out before going through with anything.

Thanks for any input!

You will want/need to do more than just put that cam in. I believe the 258 is what they put in the Stage IV 103 with 110 heads, 58mm throttle body and injector change.

Would you recommend or suggest getting the 255 cams?

Not sure about the 258's but I think they generally like more compression than your stock 96. Others will let you know. If you are doing head work or increasing the compression/cylinders, I think they are a good cam.

If you change cams, you NEED to get a dyno tune to get it right or some sort of map/auto tune.

I'd venture to say the 258 cams are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much cam for a stock 96 since they spec out as such:

SE-257 25155-00 ......569"/.569"...... 252˚/260˚........ Intake: 24˚ BTDC/48˚ ABDC...... 0.213"/.200"

.................................................. .........................Exhaust: 59˚ BBDC/21˚ ATDC

This higher power version of the SE-257 cam has been
designed for high compression big bore or larger cylinders
and piston when used in conjunction with performance
heads and open intake and exhaust. The later intake closing
sacrifices some low end torque to gain top end power. The
cam works great in cruiser bikes and provides an extra kick
above 3000 rpm so hold on tight!

Not even one I'd consider for a bagger unless I was headed to the dragstrip.

Did the math on the BB calculator and it would be a DOG in a stock 96 build. Damn thing don't start benefiting a build until about 113ci's and/or decent modifications!!! good luck wit dat!

There are some on here that put the 255's in a 96 and are happy. Others put them in a 103 and are happy. Do you want or need to stay with HD cams? Do you only want a cam for the 96 and don't plan on going to a 103? No plans for headwork? There's plenty of bolt in cams for the 96 out there. There are some bolt ins that will work with both a 96 and a 103, etc.

You don't want to do any kind of engine mod's around a cam that you can get a good price on, like Phil has been saying for years, make sure all of your engine components complement each other. There is a lot of info on this board for modifying or building an engine. First and most important question is how do you ride and what are you looking for as far as improvement. Go from there, and Good Luck. Jim.

IMO the 258's would be a poor choice without a number of engine mods, and installing these in a stock engine will result in a noticeable decrease in low-end torque. OTOH the 255's are a bolt-in cam that work very well in an otherwise stock TC96 with typical Stage 1 upgrades (tuner, AC, and mufflers). They will give a meaningful boost in low-end and midrange torque (2000-4500 RPMs), but do not make impressive peak-HP numbers. You can expect about 6-10 TQ increase and maybe 4-5 HP boost with the 255's. TQ moves up without shifting to the right, which is where many of us want the power (where we ride).

Thanks for the input guys!

I am 6' tall and 170 lbs and do mostly solo riding. My riding varies from around town to +600 mile trips a day. This is my first HD after coming off a 2002 Yamaha R1 with some mods and set up for drag racing.

I am mainly looking for some more off the line power to get me going. Right now I feel the stock 96 has moderate power on the top end for highway cruising and passing when needed.

From the looks of it the SE255's, AC, SERT and a good tune should give me some more lower end power that I'm looking for. I will keep researching here on the forum the next few snowy months and see what else I can find.

you might want to look at the Fuel Moto package. Jamie has shown impressive gains with his stage I setup. Then if you need more power, add the SE 255 if you are not planning an engine upgrade any time soon. Check with him about his PCV with Autotune. You may be able to get by without a dyno if he has the map for the SE 255. I think iclick went this way.

I didn't use the Fuel Moto package since I already had my Stage I with SERT, added the SE 255's and dyno tuned the bike. I picked up an additional 10 ft/lbs of TQ @ 3200 rpm and 9-10 HP @ 5500 rpm. I'm good until I need to do top end work because of miles or some other problems, then will likely go bigger with engine mods. But as long as my bike holds up, I've got plenty of power, good milege and a bike that runs sweet.
