Maybe the "several year tech" don't know as much as you think. My 08 compensator was replaced at 40,000 mi with a stock compensator, cleared up the problem completely. It went out again at 85,000 mi and I replaced it with a S.E. The starter and gear are all still original and working perfectly. The compensator WILL cause grinding, banging and jerking when trying to start. It happend twice to me. So maybe you can tell your "several year H-D tech" he needs to go back to school.

I'm having this problem with my 2005, supposedly it's not the compensator. Only happens when the bike is warm....
