Shockproof heavy in transmission = $9.95
Mobil I 15W-50 in crank = $22.00
Chrome HD filter = $8.00
Vavoline ATF Dexron III in Primary after tossing MTL in trash = $3.95

Oil change with butter smooth shifting and excellent clutch hook-up not to mention another oil thread? = PRICELESS!!!

To be quite honest, as a new Harley owner, they are all interesting reads to me. The sad part is, everyone says something different and everyone feels the brand oil they use is the best. So after every read, I feel like I am back at square one and its getting me nowhere.

I know what you are saying Nozzleman. It is confusing! I've read a lot of reviews on what's the best oil. If you read the independent report's, it will tell you, theres not any difference in Lubrication in the top brands of Synthetic oil's. From all the studies I've read, I am sold 100% on Synthetic oil. As for what's best, a lot depends on the individual using it. If someone tells me Redline is any better than Mobil 1 or Amsoil, I would say prove it with test that's done. I do think the guy's have a point in using ATF in the Primary. I switched to Mobil 1 ATF and I can tell a difference already in clutch response. IMO If you use a good Synthetic motor oil and Synthetic Gear lube in the tranny, you'll be ok. The reason I'm sold on Synthetic is for cooling and wear. I've seen too much evidence over the years from car engines and bike engines using synthetic oil. NO ONE will ever convince me Synthetic oil is not better lubrication. It will hold up under the heat stress the harley air cooled engine's cause. Good luck and ride safe

UltraKla$$ic, isn't that 3.95 every other change. It calls for 38 oz doesn't it? That's two quarts every other change...

I agree. There are a ton of oil threads here with everyone claiming their brand is the best. I'm always looking for the proof and asking whether the difference between some of these oils really matters. Posts like this letting us know about real differences in performance is what I like to see.

I've used the HD Trans and Primary stuff, Amsoil Trans and Redline V-Twin Shockproof and like the Redline best for the trans as well as there V-Twin Pimary oil there. It seems the Redline makes the shifting and finding neutral much easier. I don't know whether it's the trans or primary oil that makes this happen since I usually change both at same time. I put 154K miles on my EVO using the HD reg oil and was sold on it until I got the Hot Twin Cam engine and wanted to try to reduce the heat. I've stayed with Amsoil Syn in the engine since some test show it coming out ahead. If I get 150K out of this I'll be happy since I don't change the oil's nearly as often.

Yeah, and their bikes are all out there running fine on different brands of oil.

To paraphrase Ronp.... Pick a brand you like (for whatever reason that may be) and go with it. Routine maintenance is the key, IMO.
