Ok I give up!!! WTF is the trick to installing the tour pak docking hardware on an 08-earlier. I can't for the life of me get the top front bolt threaded in. It won't line up. Even when I put the back one in with the docking point the front will still not go in. I have tried using a screwdriver to get it to line up. I have loosened the saddlebag support brackets and the grab bar. No luck. I was so pissed I was getting ready to kick the damn bike off the lift. The funny thing is I had the same kit on my 08 Street Glide and don't recall it being this hard to put on.
Tips??? Tricks???
Oh and yes I tried taking a deep breath and walking away from it for a few minutes too. Three times.
Are you using a jack?
Put it on a bike jack and jack it up.
If you are on the jiffy stand it's near impossible sometimes to get everything lined back up correctly.

Yup it is up on a jack. Hence the comment I was about ready to kick it off of the....
If I remember correctly, I had to grab the fender and start tweaking it and everything finally lined up. Then on the second bike I paid the dealer. Feel ur pain.
I have a 2008 FLTR and know exactly what you are talking about. I had the bike on the jiffy stand during the install. I removed the seat and loosened a lot of the bolts securing the fender and had my wife pull in the right direction to line up the threads once they were started, I retightened everything. I never would have thought it would take that much time to install. Typical HD accessory fitment. Also, make sure you follow installation instructions. There is a different procedure for using one set or both docking points.
Hey G, did you try putting the top one in first and then try the bottom one? I don't remember having a problem with mine.
There are three points where the docking hardware bracket mounts. Two on the top and on bottom. I can get the one at the bottom (bolt and lock washer) and the one at the top towards the rear (bolt with docking point) but the top bolt towards the front of the bike is the one that will not go in. I have tried every combination of this or that first as well as loosening everything I think could help. Something is not letting it line up even with everything else in place and tightened.
Steve, been there and DONE that and WROTE the fuggin book! I had a LONG post bout 2 years ago on the VERY same thing! This year, did the same thing again and figured oh HELL FUGGING NO, this is going to suck azz again. NOT. I loosened up everything, saddlebag support rails, shock bolts etc and NO the bike was not on a jack. Just go lefty loosey on all of your hardware and it should work for you and I DO MEAN ALL. First time I did same project, 7 damn hours later I was done. This year I was done from git to go in under 45 minutes.

I have no idea what is going on. I did it too a few years back on my 08 Street Glide and don't remember having much of a problem. And don't remember having to loosen up very much. If it was this much of a PITA the first time I would remembered for sure.
