tj, what's with the "save a dime, much cheaper quality" comments? Did you personally have a problem with a Biketronics installation kit? I used the BT install kit four years ago (IIRC, the BT install kit was $50 or so less than HW's install kit) and the HT install kit worked pefectly. Functionally, both install kits solve the problem of using a DIN size headunit in the HD batwing fairing space that is for a larger, Radio Sound or Harman Kardon head unit footprint.

If you are referring to the interface modules, both BT and HW allow use of the handlebar audio controls. Biketronics includes Automatic Volume Control, which Hawg Wired's does not. AVC is a nice feature to have.
BT's module includes a lifetime warranty. Mine worked flawlessly for 4+ years/50K miles and is working fine for the guy I sold it to several months ago.

tj, if you like the HW products that's fine; many do. But dissing BT's buyers for choosing BT to "save a dime" and saying at the same time that BT's quality is "cheap" is a poor choice of words to give props to HW--I didn't regret for a moment saving $$$ with BT's install kit and module; and BT's products worked flawlessly for more than 4 years for me and many other HDF'ers.

I post this not to criticize you personally; but to help readers of your post who would be misled by your incorrect information/opinions.

Carl

PS: I chuckled to read your "save a dime, cheap quality" remarks followed immediatly by your purchase of the "excellent" BT splash cover which HW doesn't offer. Enjoy your HW products; but don't feel compelled to dis BT or any other competitive products. Lots of happy users of other amps, speakers, etc. than what you found to be good for your personal tastes.

PS: I don't really like the American Classic guys but they do have good prices from time to time, really crappy if you have to call them with a problem!!!
Basically NONE... before you order through them, get a price from Frank at Dragos here on the forum!

harleypingman, didn't mean to ruffle your feathers but I know probably 6 people who bought biketronics and 6 or 7 that bought hawg wired locally , out of the 6 that bought biketronics 4 had broken parts on delivery to biketronics credit they did take care of it, no one had issues with hawg wired, sound test all biketronic purchasers and hawg wired purchasers I personally know feel the hawg wired system sounds better, appearance it looks better made, when I talked of saving a dime I was referring to people I personally knew and that was their deciding factor, of the 6 I know who bought biketronics 3 wish they had spent the extra on hawg wired, the other 3 feel it is better than what they had and would rather have saved the money

Im currently in the market for one of these retrofit kits for my flhti.. The bike had some mocked up home made setup that the original owner paid a stereo shop far too much for. Tons of backstrap and cut up plastic pocket that comes with the flht's.

I am getting ready to do the assembly on my bike and decided, I am going to do the new stereo install right..

I have access to wholesale cost on the biketronics kit but not the hawg wired. Essentially, the hawg wired is twice as much to me.

After researching, reviewing and being 100% suprised that there are only 2 makers of these brackets - I have decided that professional appearance is more important to me (even in this crappy economy) than a "cheap" option. I hate the generic faceplate plastic on the BT kit. It reminds me of when I was young and the "Hokey" stereo shops would make their own install kits.. that textured plastic looks like chit no matter what the installer does...

So... to not make my 20k bike look like I put a Wally world stereo in it - Im paying twice as much for the Hawg wired.

This has NOTHING to do with sound as I have zero experience with either... but asthetically - BK bites.. For the HUGE profit they are making on their kit; they should have a faceplace molded so they look like they are worth the $200 retail price (YIKES!).

Even if Retail on the BT kit was 50% of what it is; it still looks like crap.. IMO for what its worth. Not trying to get any BT owners feelings hurt, dont need agression, but the beauty of forums is that people can read about other's opinions and experiences..

This is MY opinion and from my 20+ years of having 3-1k stereo systems in over 15+ vehicles, professional looking install is VERY Important to me!! Keep the agression and sensitivity for some other post please!

tj, thanks for taking the time to reply. This thread was about installation the HW kit. Did the guys you mention have problems with the BT installation kit? Or the BT interface module?

My feathers aren't ruffled; just trying to get specific information about what has long been a dependable vendor of bike audio products.

I went with BikeTronics, because of the AVC. Works great, and install was a breeze.

harleypingman, you are right, the original question was about the install kit, I should have just responded to that portion , of the 13 people I know who like I said earlier 6 with biketronics and 7 hawg wired these were all complete systems, install kit, radios, amps & speakers,no one had any trouble with the interface module and you are correct the avc is a nice feature, the 4 that had problems , 1 was with the install kit and the other 3 had bad speakers, I helped 2 install theirs with the biketronics install kit, I personally like the install hardware part, forget module, of hawg wired better, both biketronics and hawg wired are over priced for what you get but the hawg wired hawdware portion is all metal, simple to install , o rings to make it water tight and I think anyone can get a profesionally install job out of it, biketronics is not as user friendly( hardware part), also I'd like to clear up when I said 3 of the six wish they had gone with hawg wired it was because of sound volume and clarity of the systems we had all bought and not because of the install kits, with stereo systems like anything else some are looking for better than they have and some are looking for the best they can find, but your head unit ,amp and speakers all are a part of this, I went with a marine grade stereo unit which probably isn't as good as a car unit, I looked and decided the unit I wanted and didn't buy it from any of these motorcycle stereo dist, they all wanted best price 199.95 for my unit, bought it off amazon for 142 to the door freight included

tj, thanks for the comprehensive reply. Like you, I wouldn't buy the head unit from BT or HW (if HW sells them; I haven't looked at their website for that information) since they are sold at retail list, and identical head units can almost always be purchased from discounters.
