The gauge was excellent for one thing. Rip it out and installed a oil temperature gauge in its place. This will give you good information how hot your bike engine is. I noticed that around 235 degrees my 09 Ultra kicks into to parade mode. Another thing to keep in mind is that the syntheic oils break down around the 290 to 300 degree range which means that the oil is no longer lubing your engine.
Ya can hand over a hunnerd bucks + to the stealer .... or head to auto zone,o rileys, or any auto parts place and get a oil temp gauge for 25 bucks or so,,, auto meter, sun pro, ..same as a hd one, just dont say hd.
you can undo it where it is attached to the fairling bracket and move it so that it is just below the fairing. helped some, but the temp reading is usually still wrong.
Relocated mine to below the fairing. Now it's sometimes pretty accurate and sometimes 5-10 degrees below actual air temp. Go figure.
I actually replaced my temp gauge with a black faced digital with 1/2" tall red letters so it is easy to read, blends in pretty well with the other gauges, not an exact match, but OK. The gauge I used is water proof, shock resistant, goes from -25* to 250*, made for walk in style coolers, etc. Made to be used outside or in the elements. Only downfall, it is 6VDC, so you have to have a 12VDC to 6VDC reducer for it to work. Had an electrical buddy that made this for me. Mine works great, is accurate within 2* and looks good doing it. Mounted the probe between the forks, just behind the chrome cover below the headlight, outa site, protected, and not exposed to excessive temps from anything.
Now y'all got me to thinking. I want to replace the air temp gauge with something really different. What do you call those horizon things instrument pilots use? It would let me know whether I'm still upright or not.
The probe is under the fairing. IMHO is a waste of a gauge it only tells you the temp under your fairing. If the sun is beating down on the fairing the temp inside will read high.
Absolutey true. And who needs to know what the air temperature when you're on a motorcycle. You're already outside, you can tell if it's hot, cold or in between. But, it was something cheap to balance out the gauge pattern. And it is something to look at when riding. No harm done.
