They put it under the fairing for one reason only. It directly correlates to the temperature between your a$$ and the seat. Granted, a$$ temperature doesn't look as pc on the gauge as air temperature but seriously, if you had a probe (cold shiver) and measured the temperature and looked at the gauge......

Yeah, I agree it is a pretty useless gauge. I'm not sure what temp. its reading, but when its sits around the 80° mark then its going to be a pleasant ride. During the summer months the needle is completely over to the right which only confirms that its hot! Replacing it with an oil temp. gauge is a good idea.

When it's hot, I take off my jacket. When it's cold, I put on my jacket.

I agree, we know when Fall is coming and the beginning of Spring. However if it's on the Bike it should work. I am puzzled that HD doesn't have a Customer Email contact where you can send phonically correct concerns to them and repectfully get a response in turn. The dealership exchanged the guage and it now reads with in degrees of the actual Then starting it and it's another reading.... Hey take a lesson from Ford or Chevy, theirs works great! Just a thought, going riding. Later

My temp gauge read correctly, first thing in the morning.
When I first set on the bike, the outdoor thermometer would read
70 degrees. My digital oil dipstick and air temp would all read the same.
Start the engine.......never again would the temps match.
I replaced my dash air temp gauge with an oil temp gage....now the oil
temp gauge nevers matches the digital dip stick. I listen to my weather
radio for air temps. Supposed to rain tomorrow.....
