Default Air temp gauge fix?

I know I'm going to get a lot of flames but I really miss having a functioning air temp gauge on my 10 Limited. I did a little searching and couldn't find anything. I was wondering if anyone has heard of a fix by moving the temp probe outside of the fairing? My GL1800 had the probe under the fairing above the front tire. It would show temp changes every few seconds.

More curious than anything.

I know about people replacing it with an oil temp gauge. That's not what I'm looking for. Besides no where I've found said that above this oil temp you should pull over and let it cool down. So what's the point?

I call mine the crazy gage as in you must be out of your fn mind to be riding in this. The only time it's accurate is at O dark thirty when I'm getting ready to take off to work in sub freezing temps, oh yea then it's dead on.The rest of the time its ten degrees off to the plus side or if its actually hot out it's pegged.

The probe is not in the fairing. It reads the air in the intake. It operates off the same sensor as the ECM reading intake temp. That is why it is always higher than should be. Nothing you can do. This is the reason myself and many others take it out and install oil temp gauge.

mine is on the LEFT side of the frame at the steering neck.

it looks like a little black plastic cap.
wiring to it is Blue/Violet stripe (connected directly to the temp gauge)
and black for ground

positioning more "in the air stream", pulling away from the frame, gives slightly more accurate readings of something

Mine shows warmer by about 2 degrees than actual temp as-is.

I have the air temp gauge and was wondering at what air temp shown on the gauge to you start to think about shutting it down. Since I never got an answer was considering an oil temp gauge. Not sure how I would use that info either but seems more reliable and usable. I would think that there would be some oil temp value that indicates over heating.

Sure, when the AIR temp gauge gets to about 70, you may want to consider shutting things down.

Oil temp gauge is another story.

Sorry, had to.

I added the oil pressure and air temp gauges to mine. The air temp sensor was to be mounted in the fairing but I added a foot or so of wire to extend it. It fit perfect on the bottom of the triple tree where there was already the right size hole, just used a little silicone adhesive. If it's 70* out my gauge reads 70*. Seems to be very accurate.

Default re: air temp sensor

I did move my air temp gauge sensor from its original location (inside fairing).
My sensor resembled a small, "off white" colored cube. I extended the wires and quick-tied it so it was barely peeking out from under the triple tree. It appeared to be sealed and weather tight.
I find the air temp gauge to read more accurately in its new location.
It worked for me.
