I will add my opinion on this. I am no Harvard graduate but IMO the clunk just doesn't seem right. Of course it may not be hurting the bike at all. I would like to see parts from a clunker vs. a non clunker before I can say it hurts or doesn't hurt. I, myself am gonna put ATF in my primary and redline heavy shockproof in my trans to try to quieten the clunk somewhat. I do like the fact that I know it is in gear when it clunks though. Maybe I can get that happy medium where it clunks, just not as loud. Hopefully tho I can quieten it down completely,. Wouldn't hurt my feelings at all.

BTW, another way to stop the clunk is pull in clutch and roll bike back about 6 inches and then put in gear. I tried it and it works, totally silent.

Cuz I post a lot I must be wrong????? Where's the logic dude?

I don't have a garage queen and you can shove your insults up your butt.
I rode over a thou to Sturgis (one way) and toured everyday up there.
I do 150 - 300 every sunny Saturday.

Throwing insults ain't gonna make your statements any more accurate.

Up here we call that "back peddling".

You indeed said I was tightening up my chain too tight and because of that you were going to "come clunking right past me on the side of the road" because of my too-tight chain.

Translation: I can't afford to fix it right, so I use the excuse "Harley supposed to do dat". He he!

For you boys that keep telling me to chill - I'm just responding to YOUR angered posts.
Me don't need chillin' cus this here is pleasure for me to watch you get excited like this! Callin' me names and such. WTF Who needs to chill? Look in the mirror dudes!

I'll have to try that. My bike is where you wanted it; a clunk but not really a bang at all; just solid. The oils are syn, there is and will be no ATF in it, ever. This is diluting and defeating the technical purposes of your oils, as ATF is actually more of a hydraulic oil than anything. About 1/3 of the time or more, mine just drops into gear, silently and solidly, but now and then I'm not sure if it's in all the way, so I do the light tap dance to be sure.
I wouldn't like it if it did that all the time. You only have to power on one time with a partially engaged tranny to destroy it. Ask me how I know.

Automatic transmissions have clutch disks similar to yours. They like atf.

I use Redline MTL which is not atf, but is similar (red and semi thin).
Redline has since came out with a fluid that is specifically for Vtwin Primaries, but I like the MTL so well that I saw no reason to switch to it.

Mine shifts similar to the OP's. Smooth as silk. Glides right into gear. (I owe some of that to the Hydraulic tensioner).
It's a pleasure to ride.

Not really a fair assesment on atf. You realize that many manual gearboxes come from the factory with atf now instead of gear oils? Nothing in the primary of a harley requires special lube. Better cooling from a thinner fluid as well as getting to a bearing sooner may very well offset the slight difference of wear between atf and the 50 weight of Formula. Atf may not be as quiet in operation, but neither is synthetic in an engine compared to dino oil. The extra noise doesn't mean it's wearing out. Never heard of a single case of a failure from running atf, mtl, instead of the harley tar.

My transmission clunk is much less pronounced after changing to Mobile1 synthetic transmission lube and synthetic ATF in the chain case. Most newer transfer cases and all automatic transmissions use ATF, so it must lubricate and cool satisfactorily. Next I may try a hydraulic tensioner. I think the less clunk the better.
