Default Help needed on headlight trim ring on 2010 Road King

I have purchased a headlight trim ring kit for my 2010 Road King. The HD instructions say that this trim ring is to fit over the existing trim ring. I start the install and everything goes great until I finish and see that there is gap (1/8") between the new ring and the headlamp housing. Thinking that I might have did something wrong, I take it off and start all over. Same gap. Once more, I take the freaking thing off and this time I took the existing ring off too. I can see why the gap is there. The original ring is only attached to the housing in two points, the top and bottom. No matter how tight you tighten the screw at the bottom, the ring pivots back and forth on on the top and bottom attachment points so there is a gap between the ring and housing on the sides.
Does anyone have any tricks or tips to stop the pivoting so that the gap is, at least, even on both sides?

Half,

There are numerous threads and tips on this subject. I found leaving the original ring a little loose and then tightening the new ring, then loosening the new ring screw, squeezing the ring by hand and re-tightening the new ring and Repeat as necessary till the gap is gone Worked for me. Patience helps...I found if you just keep trying to get rid of the gap with the trim ring screw you will strip the head....

Hope this helps..

+1 on loosen the the stock trim ring 1st. just enough for the new trim ring to fit 'behind' the stock trim right. it will then close all the way. I have 0 gap on mine.

I am not talking about the gap at the bottom where the trim ring comes together. The gap I am talking about is on both sides where the trim ring meets the headlight housing. The top and bottom are both gapless.

I think I have discovered my problem or part of it. I have one of those POS HD dual bulb halogen headlights and its inner mount is a tad bigger than the stock head light mount. I had been looking for a good reason to take that junk off and this was it. I put my stock headlight back in then reinstalled my new trim ring. It was still a bitch to put on so I clamped it from the sides with Irwin soft c clamp. Everything went on great...except for I stripped the head out of the screw before I got it fully tightened.
Now, I have to figure out how I am going to get the freakin screw out so I can replace it. This has been a cluster f*#k from the git go but it does look good.
I am still wondering why in the Sam Hill that HD didn't design the custom trim ring with the same attachment as the stock ring. I guess that would have been too easy.

One of, if not THE biggest pain in the butt accessories in the Harley catalog.
Seems like such an easy fix to make this part fit better, yet year after year its the same ol PIA.

Have the same problem, have not been able to get the gap closed tight. Left the old trim ring loose, closed the gap a little, but still there. WTF

I went to the auto parts store and bought some chrome tape. I took a small piece and covered the gap. you don't notice it .

I know there's a ton of threads on this subject. I used the two sided 3/4" wide A/C insulated foam tape trick. Remove the stock ring and sling it across the street. Measure and cut the foam tape to fit around the retainer ring. Peel ONE side only and stick it the retainer ring (You'll never get the trim ring on if you peel both sides.. Found that one out the hard way) Slip on the new trim ring (Visor style for me) and clamp it down making sure lip is grabing onto the headlite bucket. Button it down until the damn gap is gone and your on your way. No worries. Bonus: No whisitling noises at high freeway speeds! It's bascially goes on like the running lights trim rings do. This method is quick and painless.
