I just picked up a new rg with 189 miles on it, the gentleman i purched it from did a good job breaking it in to this point, loading and unloading the motor no slab or crusing. my question is when can i take it on the superslab. I am planing on taking it on a extened ride next tuesday, like 1000 miles. i have a 05 rg i can take if yall think i should put more break in miles on it. by the way i am going to change the oil and filtre tomorrow.thanks RC
Take it easy on it for the next 300 miles, normal speeds, highway miles if you like, just don't go rev'ing the engine to 6K. After 500 or so miles just drive it like you would normally. Ain't no big thang.
Only 189 miles eh? Dang guess we failed to convert that guy to the dark side...
It's only got 189 miles on it, why change the oil? The first oil change isn't til 1000 miles and I don't recommend doing so before that. Proper break-in is kind of important IMO but it's your bike, do whatever you want.
Changing the Oil is not a bad idea .. Vary your speeds, Don't baby it but wouldn't push it past 4,000 RPM the first 500 miles .. Give it a rest every 100 miles until reach 500 then Ride it like you always would .. Opinions will differ on this topic, but is how I broke my 08 and now my 09 in which now has 1200 miles on it and running strong ..
I have always been advised to stay off the slab for the first 500 miles. Better to get off into the country roads and work the bike up and down through the gears at varying speeds. Too often on the slab you rack up the miles quickly but at a steady speed which as I understand is not good for the bike. Don't stay too much in the city either as extended idling doesn't help either. Lots of info on here though if you try the search facilty.
As for oil changes the first 50 - 100 miles can generate a lot of crap in the oil as the bike breaks in. Not a bad idea to change the oil even if the MOCO recommends 500 miles. I changed at 100kms (60 mils), again at 800kms (500 miles) and then at 1500kms (1000 miles)

I agree with Jay on the breaks. I believe breaks are more important than varying the rpms. The whole point is to bring it to operating temperature or get it hot and then let it cool completely. These are roller motors so break in on parts isn't as important as letting rings and seals and parts expand and contract so they seat properly.
