Default Inner Primary Bearing Race - I NEED HELP

I spent 2 hours searching and reading about inner primary bearing failures here on the forum. I found dozens of thread especially in the dyna section. None of them addressed the issue I have. I was hoping someone here has the same problem and could help. Let me explain.

I tore my primary apart due to a new noise I heard that went away when the clutch was pulled in. I found that the inner primary bearing was failing. The picture below shows the failing inner race on the right side. The bearing has three badly pitted rollers.

A friend had the same issue so he sent me the parts list from his repair. I also looked up the parts and ordered them from Chicago HD.

NOW FOR THE PROBLEM . . .

The new race is part # 34091-06 also INA part# F-556923.
The old part does not have an HD # but it does have INA#556923-02. You can see the failure in the picture.

The problem is that the new part slips on the mainshaft by hand. The ID is obviously bigger than the stock part. I used the HD puller to pull the old part off and I can tell you that it was pressed on tightly. The new part is also slightly shorter as you can see in the picture.

MY QUESTIONS . . .

Has anyone had this same issue? Is it possible that HD changed the part to a slip fit rather than a press fit?

I'll post this in the primary section also. Thanks for any help.

Dawg,

Good to see you're taking an interest in this.

I've been doing some research. I may have to drive to my dealer and look at the 08 part. I did a search and found that they have one in stock. I'll also call and talk with the service manager before I make the 2 hour drive.

This is holding me up BIG TIME. I have a new chrome inner primary all ready to install but I can't proceed until I get this bearing thing figured out.

It is the wrong race, absolutely is not a slip fit. When you get the right one, use some locktite Green for bearings, cant recall the number. Be fastidius about getting it set to the right depth, dont go too far or the next time (hope there isn't a next time) you go to pull it off you will not be able to get the puller jaws behind it.

Just an idea, call your local parts shop and cross reference the original part # to a Timken. It will probably be less and save a trip to the dealer. JMO

I'm kinda the "go-to" guy on the IPB problems from the Dyna side. My May '09 thread (Finally - Good News) has most of the wealth of Dyna IPB problem info within it). I don't have the part numbers, nor do I have any experience with Touring IPB issues, though. Lots of the Dyna guys are going with a Baker Heavy Duty Bearing. That p/n is NOT anywhere in my IPB thread. Maybe a search on "Baker bearing" in the Dyna section...good luck.

Thanks for the idea. I did some searching and came up with a part number abd phone number for Baker. I'll call them and find out if their bearing will fit my bike. if so, I'll go that route. What the hell, the HD part only lasted 28K. I can't really lose by trying something else.

I'm doing fine. My bike is torn to hell from front to back. Installing all the parts I bought over the Winter. New speakers, front running lights, Chrome inner primary, intercom system, etc. etc.

Frustrating that I can't proceed until I get the correct bearing. Looks like I'll go with a Baker one peice bearing. The stock bearing failed at only 28K.

If you start to hear a growl from your primary, it's probably the same thing. Greg in Portland had his IPB bearing changes also at 30K.

So I heard you're mounting a fairing one yours? What's up with that????

I hear ya............... I haven't rode mine since early Dec. Here's a pic of it as it sits. Waiting for the inner fairing to get painted, then I start the install.
