Try using a grease pencil, won't wash off with rain water, but cleans off easily with a cloth.

 

You could get some static cling window film from Staples or Office Depot or most window tinting companies and write the directions on them and stick them to the windshield then toss them at each destination. Static cling window film is the kind of film that does not require any adhesives to stick to another smooth surface.
