Default How Hot Is To Hot?

Get out the popcorn for this one!

I understand all the issues with lean closed loop AFR and and the cat with my Stock '10 SG. I plan to do complete exhaust, air and tuner but haven't shot the lock off the wallet yet. I recently installed the digital dipstick and have finally been able to get out from under the northern Colorado winter and ride a bit. I'm consistantly running 220 F with 40 F weather but recently had a 65 F day and ran 245 F which the dipstick considers "High Oil Temp." I also plan to switch to synthetic oil soon to address heat breakdown but even with that am concerned about possible valve and piston damage when outside temps rise. At what oil temp should I be concerned?

In my opinion, which ain't worth much, you're asking for trouble if your oil temps hit 270 with synthetic.

One of the first mods I added was an oil cooler. It immediately cooled things off on my 07 by about 25 degrees. Dealing with the exhaust and a good tuner will fix the rest of it.

Your opinion is worth gold! I was thinking 270-280 is the limit. So far the relationship to outside temp appears proportional. If so, the first 80 degree day (which could next week here in Colo.) I'm running a risk. What temp. do you run and how are you set up? Thanks!

Thanks! I've been wondering about a cooler and have looked mostly at the UltraCoolFL as an option since it has a fan which makes sense to me when I get caught in a parade on the freeway.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, just keep it lubed and keep it moving and you'll be just fine. I think you should hold off on an oil cooler for now, do your upgrades, ride it for a summer and then if you think you still need one, get one. JMO

See you out there neighbor!!!

270 to 300 on 06 SG I had. Dealer said no worries that is normal here, Texas. I stopped thinking about it because it will drive you crazy. The bikes are different and once you know where yours performs at as "normal" then start worrying when it goes out of that range.

Damn it Sancho you've confirmed that I have to shoot the lock off my wallet! LOL! Which I was going to do at some point, and now sooner than later. Thank you, that's the feed back I was looking for.
