Four words for your dealer: Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Under this federal law: The main point of interest is that the Act says warranty coverage may not be conditioned upon the use of only the vehicle manufacturer's parts unless the parts are provided free of charge. In other words, use of a non-carmaker product should not void your warranty unless it caused the problem.

Warranty coverage can be denied only if the aftermarket part caused the malfunction or damage for which warranty coverage is sought.

See this link.

If AMSOIL caused leaks, engine seizures and the like:

1) Everybody here would warn everbody else
2) Same on every other motorcycle/car forum on the Internet - On which--by the way--AMSOIL enjoys a fairly stellar reputation
3) They'd be out of business

When I went for an oil filter at the HD Dealer, they asked if I needed Oil. I said "nope". He asked what I was using, I told him Mobile 1 V-Twin, he asked why not Syn3, I told him because it's crap. Test after test posted on public forums shows that it's crap and I won't put it in my bike. He said Syn3 is all he used in his, and I told him "good luck with that", and off I went.

Bottom line is the guy you spoke to is preying on ignorance. Show them you have a clue with facts to back it up and they become more agreeable.

I read somewhere that v-twin oil, and regular car oil are different. They said v-twin oil is most fitted for a higher RMP engine, and a air cooled one. I am not an oil pro but I have done alot of reading about different oils. I know Amsoil has done much R/D to make their oil, and all the tests show they make great oil, I havent seen much on mobil 1.....do they make a 20w50 for v-twins? If they do I would think its ok to use it. I love Amsoil I use it in everything I own except my dog.
There is a law on the books called the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, that states no MOCO can tell you what brand of oil to use. Also if the MOCO does require a certain oil brand then they must offer it for free! Tell your dealer that you want free oil when they say Amsoil will void your warranty!

I just bought an '07 EG and the dealer told me that I can NOT use mobil1 75w-90 in my transmission. I should use the HD+1 or something like that.

I use cheap oil for the motor , usually penzoil. I asked the sevice rep at our local shop what he recommends. and while walking out to my bike he told me to buy cheap oil 20w50 and change it often. I agree with him and will not spend the extra money for a synth when I am just going to dump it all out in 3000miles anyway. The service rep that made that the original remark probably gets paid a commission on any sale. If you were in that position what would you say? He believes that most cutomers don't know anything about oil and their own machines, and took a chance that you didn't eigther.Glad you put him in his place..Mark..

Bullcrap. I used Royal Purple in my '96 RK for nine years and 106k miles and never had a lick of trouble with the tranny, or much of anything else on that bike. I'm using 85w140 in my new SG and it is smooth and quieter (the 6-speed will never be really quiet).
