Also, I was wanting to have them installed during Biketoberfest in Daytona this year, is that you I always see in the big tent doing installations? If so, are you also going to be doing the front forks also? I know last year they would not do the fronts during the rally.

Just as Gordon65 stated, the 440's would be your best bet

Sounds like these folks have you sorted. The 13" 440 Series shocks woll work very nicely for your bike/riding style. Recommend black finish, saves a few bucks and they are hidden. Pay attention to the preload settings. They are shipped full soft and have a total of 9 or so turns of the preload cap (no tools required).

I can share my experience with Progressive Inc regarding the lifetime warranty on my 940's. I purchased a pair of 940's last month for a long road trip on my RK. After 400 miles down the road I had a seal leak in one of the shocks. I called Progressive while broke down on the road and they told me that I would have to ship my 940's to CA (at my cost) and they would NOT replace but REPAIR the shocks. There was no indication as to how long this would take. Based on that I was forced to buy some new HD shocks so I could return my 940's to Progressive and continue my trip.

It was my thinking that they would just send me to a Progressive outlet and let me get a new pair of 940's. But when you read the fine print in the warranty it dosen't work that way. They will only make "repairs" for the life of the shock. That mean regardless how many times the seals go bad the will repair it. I just can't afford the down time and having to keep a back up pair of shocks.

I did like the way the 940's it lowered me 1" but after buying a pair of HD low profile air shocks (at half the cost) I really think the HD's feel and ride a lot better.

I hope this information helps.

So their failure here is what?

"it was my thinking" means they have to abide by your expectations and desires, as apposed to their clearly spelled out warranty terms that you did not bother to read before buying?

What would OTHER shock companies do for you in this case? Including the ones that are custom made and cost twice as much?

I'm sorry to hear of your problem but I would not go back to air shocks, air shocks are the lowest quality of ride you can get, I just installed the Progressive 1" lower monotube forks and will be putting the 940 shocks on this weekend, if I am unhappy with them I would look at Ricor or Ohlins but I do not like air shocks, in Progressives defense I understand your disappointment but most manufacturers will just repair or replace a defective product after examining it which does little good for you if you are on the road as you stated before and break down, it's aggravating but normal procedure

I agree with you that I may have had high expectations but there are indeed a few compainies out there that would provide new replacement shocks. I just thought that since I paid almost $600.00 for my 940's and only had 400 miles on them that Progressive Inc would have tried to help sinince I was broke down in another state and just starting my vacation. A good lesson for ME- I need to read and research more before making a purchase.

Here is just one of many postings I've found about what other companies do:

"Hi Folks,

Just to let you know about my experience with Arnott inc.
I purchased a set of Softail air shocks from Arnott in July 2008 whilst on holiday in Florida. When I arrived back in the UK I promptly fitted the hardware to my wife’s bike.
The difference they made to her riding experience was phenomenal not only is the bike a lot more comfortable but as she can reduce the seat height at the touch of a button it gives her much more confidence where going slow or stopping and having to move the bike around. While out riding this weekend the shocks developed a problem so I called Corey at Arnott and explained the issue I was having, he immediately posted me out a replacement set of shocks under warranty. I have to say the service I have had from Arnott Inc is second to none and would highly recommend them to any of you if you are contemplating upgrading your bike suspension.

Arnott Inc A+A+A+A+

Regards
George "

For what its worth, I agree with you. 400 miles in, I think they should have overnited out a new pair. But, we all do get burned (myself included) by not checking the terms before buying, pisses ya off, but what do you do? Research more closely next time. For me, the words "lifetime warranty" scream out "read the fine print carefully"

I wonder if you had spoken to a different person at progressive, if you would have gotten more support. Sometimes things like this come down to the luck of the draw on who picks up the phone, sad, but true.

Its a catch-22. Im sure a LOT of people really abuse return/warranty policies, and the rest of us pay the price when companies wont bend from policy, even in a case like yours, where I truly think they should have.

I've been thinking about a new set of shocks. I had narrowed my choice down to Ricor or Progessives. I think your problem helped me decide. The Ricor sound good plus they have the money back guarantee however I haven't ruled out a set of Progressive 412's for about $200 but I would not spend $600 on a set of Progressives.

If I sold you new shocks and they failed after 400 miles and you were on the road, I'd have to bite the bullet and send a new pair ASAP. That makes good business sense to me. I'd call it customer service.

400 miles is only 1 day when you're on a trip. That ain't long.
