Just came back from a 200 mile ride and it seems like the steering head (?) is loose (or something, ain't sure). When I hit a good bump it really seems like the front end moves, like there was flex between the forks and the frame, and makes a clunk sound (like the bike just ain't tight). Since I'm going to have the front end off to change out the forks and replace the OEM springs with a Progresive lowering kit - what else should I be looking at to address/check this clunking thing?
Sounds like the steering head needs adjustment, what year bike & how many miles? Procedure for adjustment is in the manual. Have you noticed any wobble or just the clunk?
I'd take it to the dealer & have it fixed under warranty before you do anything else, they are supposed to be checked at the 1K service, but if they feel alright they usually don't go any farther.
It's an 09 roadglide, 11k miles, no wobble, just clunk and flex.
By buddy has an 09 SE Road Glide. His bike was doing the exact same thing. His steering head bearing was set up too loose. I also just adjusted mine on my 07. It is a bit of a PITA to get to the adjuster but it can be done with patience.
1. Remove the instrument pod.
2. Loosen the jam nut on top.
3. Fashion a tool to adjust the star nut (that you can't see)
4. Tighten the jam nut.
The test for tightness is in the manual along with the official instructions on how to do it. Like I've said before . . . GET A MANUAL FIRST.
Thanks but that's 11,000 miles (11k) and it just came from the dealer (where I bought it last Dec.) and it already had the 10k SVC. However, it's still under Warranty but I certainly don't want the bike sitting at the dealership for the first 3 weeks of riding season if I can do something myself next week (have manual, tools, and competence).

the neck bearings in my 08 streetglide were loose, and this was at 14k miles. harley did it for me just prior to my warranty running out. they'll adjust yours for you, surely.
