Default Tour Pak question...

Thinking about adding a quick disconnect used Tour Pak to my 09 FLHT. It would be a solo set up. Does it matter what the year of the Tour Pak is? How old can you go?

Thanks...

OT

I don't think it matters how old the body of the actual tour-pak is, but you will need the new mounting bracket that attaches to the bottom of the pak and fits with rear fender docking hardware that was introduced with the '09s.
In other words, if you can attach the new style mounting bracket (about $180) to the bottom of your used tour-pak, it will work with the docking hardware on your '09.

Any King tour pak that is older than an '09 version will require that you drill holes in the bottom metal plate and shell to match the holes in the tour pak rack. Drilling holes isn't difficult and you use the rack hole pattern to provide a template.

The mold of the bottom of the King tour pak changed around the 2006 model year to be essentially flat on the bottom so that the nuts that secure the metal plate to the bottom are recessed. Previously, the mold of the bottom was ribbed to accommodate the mounting hardware and the nuts clearly visible. Either version of the King tour pak can be mounted on the '09 and newer detachable rack.

If you do a search for chopped tour pak there are pictures of the bottom which will show you the ribbed versions since I don't believe HD has yet changed the bottom of the chopped tour paks.

HD also changed the material of the King tour pak in about 2005 from fiberglass to an injected plastic.

I've had both the pre-06 (fiberglass/ribbed bottom) and post-06 (plastic/flat bottom) tour paks and either will work fine.
