yes you need to remove them from the tree,makes it alot easier to get all the old parts out , one fork tube has to be taken apart (slider removed from leg ) to replace bottoming cup on one side (01) model ,easy to instal read instructions real good

On my Road King with an 1"and half drop I have a little over 3" from the top of fender to the bolt that holds the brake splitter on under the trees. Did not go with the heavy duty fork oil, was told this would make for a too stiff of a ride up front. No bottoming what so ever and rides very smooth. Has made a big difference in getting my feet flat on the ground after installing the bigger front wheel.
