Someone on this forum once suggested leaving an old 45 US Army holter on the front brake handle. I thought that was a novel idea. Myself I lock it, cover and try not to worry too much about it. So far no one has ever touch it.
Been riding since 1973 and have had only one problem.
I was a dormitory director in western Nebraska when a huge blizzard blew through and formed unbelievable drifts.
I left the dorm for a few hours after the road was cleared, came back, and saw my motorcycle sitting on top of the dorm cafeteria. The wonderful residents had pulled it up a snow drift!
I realize that you're asking a security question about the UC, but you indicated that you originally were interested in riding a RK, but that they had none available. Unless you're absolutely committed at this point to an UC, do yourself a favor and ride a RK before deciding. I have both a RK and an UC, and for short- and medium-distance riding, the RK is way more fun, since it is lighter and doesn't have all that "junk" on it.
If you are riding all day long for a week, though, you want an UC.
Another consideration is the area where you live. My parents live nearby (Sun City) and it's awfully hot there (yeah, like you don't know). The RK will be a cooler ride.

Thanks for the advice about the heat issue and the RK being a cooler ride. I live in Surprise AZ, Sun City borders us, so your parents and I are just about neighbors.
And yes, 99% of my riding will be commuting to and from work and some weekend jaunts.
maybe twice a year I will be doing traveling under a 1000 miles
Have never worried about it and the bike has been parked overnight at some pretty seedy places over the years.
Only time I even had someone attempt to steal something off the bike was in KY on my way back from FL. It was warm and we were taking a longer break for food so I left the jacket on the bike. (I use one of the stainless cable locks threaded down a sleeve to secure it.)
We were just sitting down when I saw this guy go running by my bike, grab the jacket and ....... all but did a back flip!!! I mean to say his feet when higher than his head when that cable jerked him back. Knocked him out cold. Cops had him in cuffs for 20 minutes before he came around.
