2)only use spacers behind the two top bolts and slide the saddle bag mount back behind the new bracket not in front like the instructions show, the saddle bag bracket is the same thickness as the the other two spacers so it shims the new bracket out perfect and leaves the saddle bag bracket in the original spot.

John
I agree that the instructions suck. However, I have to disagree with the above post regarding the location of the saddlebag mount. Believe it or not, in this instance the instructions are correct. I originally did the same as Copperjohn. I installed the saddlebag mount behind the new bracket. Unfortunately, I would scratch my Street Glide's saddlebag lid on the passenger backrest everytime I opened and closed the lid. This is the reason HD tells you to install the saddlebag mount on the outside of the bracket. It gives you the extra clearance needed between the lid and backrest. It's not a problem until you install the backrest.

On my Road King Classic and Road King Custom I didn't have the problem with scratching the saddlebag lids because the bags were leather. However, if you have a bike with hard bags (painted), you will definitely want to make sure that you put the saddlebag mount on the outside of the bracket, or you will scratch your lids.

Dude, where were you last week!?!!?!? I needed that info when i was putting mine on. [sm=dontgetit.gif] The instrucstions made it look like rocket science. Ended up taking it to the dealer to put on and charged me $75. Dang!
This installation was discussed about 3 months ago on this forum and several of us talked about it. I think they make the instructions (in this case destructions) hard to understand so that you have to take it to the stealer after you get frustrated with the mis-information given in the destructions. I want things done right so I do them myself if possible.

I gotta agree with you there Doug, I have always said and notice when my backrest is on I have to be VERY careful because the clearance is less than 1/8". No scratch yet only because I noticed that right off the bat, I would say if anyone but me closed the lid I would for sure have a scratch [:@]
