It depends on which Corky's you go to. I like the one down in Collierville.

It would have to get A Lot better by location. I live near Kansas City where the best BBQ is.
If ya want the best bar none it's the Wabash...

The way things are lately I try not to even stop in Memphis. Last time I was coming through and had to gas up on the south end right off of 55 and my wife almost got mugged by a crack head that resembled a gorilla. The only area I'd feel ok in is north or east. West is a crap hole until almost little rock and south is bad till the mississippi line.

I always carried a gun when I went to Memphis. I've always said "Its better to be illegally alive than to be legally dead".

After staying at the Day's Inn in Memphis, my wife swore never to stay at a Day's Inn anywhere. I don't know what your standards are, but the place was pretty run down last August when we stayed: dirty, clogged toilet, panhandlers knocking on the room door 5 minutes after we got there, etc.

I'm not the kind of person who stays at 5 star hotels and expects everything to be perfect. Comfort Inn, Motel 6, that sort of place suits us fine. But this particular Day's Inn was pretty bad.

Maybe it's better now, I don't know. But it is in a pretty low-budget area of town.

Not judgin', just sayin'

I just returned from working in Memphis for a week.
I stayed at the downtown holiday inn. its a pos. I would suggest anywhere else depending on your budget. Peabody looked nice. They have a night club on the roof but I didn't get a chance to go. Down town is pretty noisy so bring ear plugs but I really liked it because everything is there. Just walk or take a horse drawn carriage. Wednesday night is bike night on beale st its pretty cool. There are plenty of cops around to discourage muggers but I dont really like cops much. There are also, I don't really know what to call them, but people on the streets to help you out. I assume they work for the city. they are dressed in a uniform and you can't miss them. The ball park is there, basketball arena, tons of things to do. I really had a good time. Graceland is cool. Elvis still lives. I would take the advice of some others to take it safe but I had no problem downtown.
Take care and have a good time

This might not be the thread for this..but what are your feelings about Nashville...is it the same situation as Memphis???...we are planning a trip to TN this summer and planned on stopping in Nashville to check out the sights (at least for 1 day). I admit I live in a area where most of the things discussed here don't happen. I've toured the south a lot, but never stopped in Nashville.

We stayed at the Hampton - one block from Beale and very close to the Gibson plant. Plenty to do, hear and eat on Beale. Covered/monitored parking for the bike and it was clean. Really enjoyed our stay. The BBQ was overrated. Corky's was crap, wish I hadn't wasted our time there. If you like Appleby's you will like Corky's. Blue's City Cafe had the best ribs in our opinion, but the music probably had a lot to do with them.

Avoid Interstate 40 if possible.
