Default Memphis, TN - Areas to avoid?

Looking for some info. We are coming down from Nashville next week via Shiloh. We plan to come in from South of the City and go north on EP Blvd. to Graceland. Any rough areas, as in bullets flying, Gang activity, we should be aware of? Staying at the Days Inn Graceland overnight. Any advice would be appreciated.........apart from Lock and Load as this is not that type of Vacation. Posted this in the Road Trip section but not much going on over there right now.
Appreciate any info.

the area around Graceland is fine during the day but it is a rough area. I would either stay out east or at one of the casinos in Tunica Ms about 30 miles south of Memphis. For BBQ there is the rendevous, corky's, and Interstate BBQ. Also may want to check out the Gibson guitar factory downtown. On Wednesday night there is a bike night on Beale where they close traffic and it is all bikes lined up and down the street.

When I lived there (I lived in Germantown) I was told “If you ever find yourself on a street named after a president, get out and get out fast”.

Graceland is fine, but the area around it is very dangerous.

I agree with staying at one of the casinos in Tunica. They are very close to Graceland and are all Vegas like.

I would do Beale Street (world famous). I thought they closed the streets down on it (about 4 blocks worth) every night to walk bar hopping and listen to different music. You need to stay on Beale Street, around it is not a good place to be.

We had some friends down one time and stayed at the Best Western down town because we were going to be doing some heavy drinking on Beale Street and didn’t want to drive. It was the rattiest place my wife and I have every stayed. She was so mad she turned them into the Better Business Bureau. It didn’t do any good though.

During the day check out “The Peabody” it's also one of Memphis' most popular attractions. The Peabody Ducks march to and from the Grand Lobby daily at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The "Pink Palace Museum" is also one of Memphis' landmarks.

I always stayed at a hotel about two blocks north of Beale and west of the Peabody. It was the Raddison then but I haven't been down there for about ten years. If you get south of Beale St. it gets rough FAST. Like in a couple blocks fast. The surrounding area around Graceland is pretty rough too.

First off let me say I don't give a ratz azz about live music, but:

It may have changed since I lived there (10 years ago) but every casino had an open bar that always seemed to have a band playing. Kind of like Vegas use to be back in the day, except you can hear the band, while you also at the tables gambling if your close enough.

and every band (local talent) was great. I didn’t realize it until I moved to Texas, because every band I have heard here sucks compared to the worst one in Memphis. A couple of name bands I remember playing free in the bar where CC Rider and another time was Paul Revere and the Raiders.

If you can time it, try and catch Jason D. Williams. It's the most pure intertainment I ever saw. He's from Memphis and use to play a lot at the casinos.

If you go thru Germantown on your way in, DO NOT SPEED! If the speed limit is 45 and you are doing 46, you will be pulled over.

Say hi to Elvis for me.

I would NOT stay anywhere in the Graceland area overnight. Unless you stay in the middle of downtown, and I'm not fond of it, I'd find something east of Memphis. Maybe Germantown, Bartlett area. There are alot of place to stay in the Wolfchase Mall area right off I-40 going east from Memphis.
