Default Elf Audio amp tuning

I received my Elf Audio amp last night and plan on installing it tonight. Anyone have any tuning tips? The owner's guide and the website are vauge. I want to get the best performance out of my investment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Good article here. http://www.teamrocs.com/technical/pages/gains.htm

Set it for louder then you think your gonna need it.

How do you have it set up? How many speakers and brand?
Let us know how it goes I have been thing about replacing mine.

Just turn the head unit on when you have the amp installed and the fairing off the bike. Using a jeweler's Philips head screwdriver, you can adjust the gain for each channel easily to suit your ear. On my Arc 125.2, I set it 1/2 way between min. and max. after trying it at lower and higher settings. You'll hear the change in sound as you adjust the gain and use the settings that sound good to you. Start at the min. setting and go from there.

Don't know if the Elf has the same controls as the Arc, but the above worked for me.

Let's see if I can sumarize.
10 gauge + red wire direct from battery with inline 25 amp fuse. Run under tank.
10 gauge black wire from ground closer to amp. I used front crash guard screw.
Amp control wire to + wire from cigarette lighter ( ignition controlled).
Set Gain indicator straight up. ( Ballpark starting point which is where I left mine). Adjust to pleasing sound as needed.s If using a voltage gauge (more precise) Follow Sam 2010 in the J&M amp install on Al's Street Glide thread and set gain to indicated 15.7-15.8 volts.
Set Bass boost at zero.
Set crossover at 100 -110.
Set output full.
Using included speaker plug follow manual diagram for 2ohm or 4ohm speakers. Connect ground wire from plug to cigarette wire - wire.
If using J&M 7.25 speakers ( My choice), set HK unit to: AVC off, Bass 3-4, andTreble to 3 bars.
Set mp3 input device to max volume.

This is only the summary of my install using the theads of many contributers to this forum. My thanks to all. I used Elf, ARC and J&M info together since the appear to be made by the same manufacturer ( my assumption and you know the caveat there).
Good Luck and enjoy.

Please anyone with corrections chime in.

FWIW, the Arc 125.2 motorcycle pak came with these Crossover and Level settings:

Output: High;
Crossover: Just before 110;
Bass Boost: Zero; and,
Gain: Between the "a" and "i" in the word "GAIN" using the molded indicator on the gain dials.

I don't have any experience "tuning" an amp. I used the above initially, then tried the gain adjustment when I had my fairing off the bike after the installation. Only changed the gain to midway; so slightly higher than above reference point. Also have Bass boost at 15 db.

Choice of speakers probably makes a difference in the settings. I'm using the HK head unit and Inifinity Reference 2 ohm impedance speakers and suspect 2 ohm impedance speakers would have different settings from 4 ohm impedance speakers.

Perhaps Firecap501 (Wayne) can chime in and offer some suggestions and advice on settings, particularly if speaker impedance makes a difference.

I have the elf amp and J&M 7.25 speakers, I have the gains on both channels set around 70%, the bass boast around 30% and output at full.

It is really hard to tune the amp with the fairing off, as the sound you hear going down the road is what really matters. I spent a lot of time making it sound good in the garage and after putting everything together and hitting the road it sounded like crap. The settings I have listed are where I am at now and it sounds good to me at highway speed. I have been making adjustments every time I have the fairing off for something.

If you set gains to this formula. FOR any amp. your equipment will last a long time. Free test tone down loads and instructions on setting gains.
If I want to turn volume way up I dont want to distort or damage speakers.

Thanks guys. This gives me a good place to start and a lot less apprehension about dialing it in properly. I liked the article from Akitakoi. I have a Biketronics Sony head unit and Polk Audio 6.5 speakers. I am hoping the amp puts me into the realm of enjoyable sound at 80 mph. Any further input would be appreciated.
Another question: Some have said to turn off the AVC when using an amp. What is the benefit of that other than avoiding excessive volume as your RPMs increase? I would think I would want the sound lowered as I slowed down for the light. I am thinking this is personal preference or is there another reason? Thanks

If your gains are not set right then the AVC can over drive your speakers.

Gain Setting Equation
Voltage of the output = sqrt(RMS Power X impedance of the speaker)
Its not as hard as it sounds to set your gains with a volt meter.
DO keep in mind set meter on "AC Volts"
