I live at the end of a 1/4 mile long gravel (or more accurately, rock) driveway. My riding buddies will putt down this thing at about 3 mph. I have gotten used to it, but if I am not careful one day I will get overconfident and embarrass myself. Never dropped it on gravel, but I did drop it in my garage once.

I put some more gravel on there a few months ago, and there is a place where a culvert runs under the driveway. Hit some loose gravel and thought I was gonna ride off the edge of the culvert.

The Road King is a lot easier to ride on that gravel than my Sportster or my brothers KLR650, though. Wider front tire, I guess.

Dropped mine the first time backing up. I think we figured out what I did. Had momentum going and my left leg came back but I hit her floorboard and the momentum was more than I could make up for. I've learned to "walk" wider or let her wait until I've backed out to get on. Embarrassing. But we learn...

Bike was not scratched and neither was my wife, I got out with a pretty good burn on my calf from the pipes and a pretty large bruise in my ego. On top of that we went to a local watering hole and everyone was checking out the bike and when we went to leave it wouldn't start, nothing, had to take the seat off and reconnect the pcv. I had forgotten to "lock" the connector back after doing some adjustments. I think I'll just stay home the rest of the evening.
Yep as all have said don't sweat it we've all done it. Cool to see a fellow railroader on here. I'm a BLE member as well. Keep it on the rails and on the road brother!

I have to throw this out there. I heard it the other day and thought it was the best Chuck Norris fact I had heard.

Chuck Norris has been known to turn his condoms inside out so that they will be "ribbed for HIS pleasure"

As I said in another thread on this subject, let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. If you think you're stupid, how would you feel if you were parking in front of the health club, with big picture windows in front for everyone to observe, and you dismount without setting the kickstand. Yep, I did it. Now that's stupid. Fortunately there were few in the club at the time to see it.

This reminds me of the best "save" I've ever seen. While in Sturgis in 1996 we were at Cheyenne Crossing" which is little more than a watering-hole and restaurant near Deadwood, SD, and a large group was lined up to enter the highway from the parking lot. A guy on an EG with his wife on-board began to fall over, and he instinctively popped the clutch and throttle launching the bike forward a few feet, enough to right it. It was a great save, as had he not done that he would've taken a fall right in front of a big audience. Of course this likely wouldn't work well in gravel.

......and you dismount without setting the kickstand.....

That;s one of my fears, forgetting to drop the stand, or better yet, forgetting to pop it up before taking off! I have been fortunate so far.

Uh, yeah. Forgetting to pop it up when you take off can be embarrassing and unnerving...so I've been told...

Then I guess I'm the Goober Supreme. Dropped it to the left in deep chat with wife on the back while pulling into a scenic turnout in Yosemite NP. Some other tourists helped us get the bike back up. We got back on and I proceeded to drop it to the right as we tried to pull out of the lot. That damn chat is worse than loose sand.

No real harm done, but I learned from this fiasco. It's far better to plan ahead. Avoid bad spots if you can. If you can't, have your passenger dismount, because two up you're not going to save it once the tip is under way.
