I was readjusting my riders backrest yesterday for an upcoming trip on friday....I was tightening down the nuts that hold down the base for the riders backrest and one of the stock bolts snapped off with the nut....any suggestions on how to fix my dilemma? anybody know the size of stock bolt that comes up through the rear fender??? Are you talking about where it mounts to the fender?

You will need to get a set of easy outs. They are a tool designed to extract snapped off bolts. They work pretty well as long as the bolt isn't rusted fast. If it is, you will need to drill out the bolt and use a Heli-coil kit or tap and die kit to rethread the opening.

It is a stud plate, pn#59174-99 that is stock on 99 and later models. If yours is 99 and older, you can just buy the new plate.

Try using an electric pencil to walk the broken piece out. Tap a couple of centerpunch divots out near the perimeter; put the tip of the buz-pencil in the divots and apply some push in the "unscrew" direction. I've seen and done this with near-magical results before.

Forget easy out or any other suggestions. It's a curved plate with two studs that comes in from the bottom of the fender. It is held in place by two plastic star washers. You are going to need the above mentioned part and will have to take the rear wheel off to fix it properly.
