The city of boston,ma. also passed a law last year that bikes require the stamp on the mufflers or you get a $500.00 dollar ticket and it is a hit on your insurance.
Do the laws very by state? When I was talking to an American Ironhorse rep a couple of years ago, he said their bikes had to be under 104db to be certified.
Glad I live in GA. We'll be one of the last states for the hammer to come down. It's sad that the straight pipe crowd and throttle blippers ruin it for everyone.

LOL
I work in boston. If you ask any meter maid about this, they will laugh their AZZ off. They aren't getting down on the ground to search for a stamp. MMA fought it and basically, it will never be enforced. typical boston BS.
They DO at least leave the bikes alone this year. They've been pretty lenient about how parking is done "down town" now a days. You aren't supposed to park a bike in boston unless it's along the curb. no rear tire and no front tire to the curb. You got to park like a car. ridiculous.
I guess MMA struck a deal with the city to go easy on us because they are actually testing and implementing motorcycle only parking this summer.
Also during americade in lake george NY the state leo's set up checkpoint at the begining and at the end of americade they really are not that bad they are really checking for reg and inspection and license you would be surprised how many people do not have a bike license mufflers are very minor i know they gave tickets for straight pipes with no baffles but as long as you were respectful and you cooperate they wont bother you with aftermarket mufflers with baffles in its the people who take the baffles out that will get a ticket
I have rinehart mufflers on and went through many checkpoints without issue i am just glad i dont live in CT

Noise ordinances vary widely not only from state-to-state, but at the county and town levels too. Remember it's not necessarily going to get enforced as a traffic or motor vehicle citation, they may cite you under local public nuisance laws.

City planners are such idiots! If bikes are allowed to park two or three to a car space they can free up much needed parking space in a city AND cars can still use the space if there are no bikes around.. If the morons implement bike parking, no cars can use the space if no bikes are around, like during cold/rainy/snowy days. That parking space goes unused and now cars are scrambling to find parking space.
Like I said, those planners are IDIOTS. They don't think past their noses.
I use Bruel & Kjaer SPL dB meters professionally in my work to "ensure" noise compliance with our city's LRT trains. Let me tell you here and now that there is no way to control the ambient sounds around the vehicle being tested, let alone the sound dynamics in any given environment. What this means in simpler terms is that the meter can't selectively record only your exhaust sound level. It will record the noise of the traffic around you, the passing planes overhead, and other high and low frequency noises outside of our normal hearing range. Then there is the matter of sound wave reflections and shaping causing amplification. Something as small and simple as a curb could refocus or reinforce the sound to the meter, let alone building or ground reflections. For accurate measuring, you must measure your noise source in an acoustically isolated environment. This of course is impractical as no one is going to drag around an acoustic chamber to measure bikes, cars or trains. Like the polygraph, the readings are subjective and open to interpretation.
