Pipes that is...I have a 2006 Road King Classic, that I've had lowering shocks and lowered fork kit put on. Mustang solo seat, I still can't flat foot. I have very short legs. The problem comes in when putting my feet down to stop when the pipes are hot. I've learned to lean to the right side to help but it's still hot as heck on the back side of my legs. But last night was the worst. I was in a parade type ride for a good length of time, got stopped, and everyone backed up and parked at the side of the road where we were stopping. I couldn't do it My left leg almost fried on the pipe. Some nice guy saw me struggling and ouch, ouch ouching and pushed me back in line with everyone else.
My question is, what is the best solution? I've read to get slipons and stage 1 with a tuner and that will cool it down. Some say an oil cooler. I've read to that some people ceramic coated their pipes. But really, will any of these cool the pipes enough that I don't burn myself? Would a better answer be something like the Arnott air system so that I can get flat footed and be able to back up without my leg plastered to the pipe? Or would that help me to get my legs far enough away from the pipes?
The pipe shield will still be about 350 degrees near the head even after tuning. Different pipes have different routing out of the rear head. May need to look at different pipes to see if one type or another is less intrusive to your leg. Wrapping the pipe with heat tape is an option also. I do not know how effective ceramic coating is. change the exhaust and get a fuel management tuner and get it dynoed and put full synthetic oil.u can also add a harley premium oil cooler and buy a fan for it. i did alll this and no more problems but it is kinda pricey. but my motor is also a 103. good luck and ride safe.
+1 on all Vtwin said. If you decide to go the boot route and protect your legs, then I would recomend Wesco over Chippewa. Both are excellan boots and I have a pair or 2 of each brand. I wear the Wesco's line boots at work and Chippewa's for rideing. I suggest the Wesco's only because they offer custom fitting. Click the custom fitting link on the site and see what I mean. Once you have drawn out your templates they keep them on file for future use. With a taller boot you would get a good fit to your calf all the way to the top. Due to an accident some years ago my left ankle is much thicker than the right, and the custom fit is nice. Both are made in the USA and wear like iron, Chippewa just doesn't offer the custom fit.
Get a fuel controller on it. These things are starving for gas! A PC III added a couple of weeks ago cooled my bike down nicely. It no longer fries my inner thighs.
Good boots is the best and cheapest solution. Trying to cool down pipes will have an effect but reducing heat by 100 degrees is not going to feel too different if your leg is coming in direct contact with the pipe - only for radiated heat. Heat wrap could work if you like the look but I have no experience of this.
How bout a lower seat. The Sundowner sits lower than the Mustang and its more comfy IMO. Definately need a good fuel manager, makes more difference than you might think.
Malteseyo, the guys suggesting a fuel management system did not read your post correctly, on a 2006, you don't have the heat problem they are talking about. If you take an 08, 09, or 2010 and put the best fuel management system money can buy, you will still burn your leg if it touches the exhaust pipe. Your problem is not the engine running too lean, your problem is you are short in stature, Like vtwin, and some others said, your fixes will come by lowering your Bike, your seat, or wearing protective gear [ High Boots ] Lots of people have to modify their Bikes, or their Riding Gear.

Thanks everyone. I don't believe high boots would be the answer as it is really high up on my leg. I can't imagine being able to move in boots that high. As for the Sundowner seat, that's the first one I bought, and while very comfy, it raised me up higher. Tried the reach seat, and was very uncomfortable sitting on the tank. That Mustang is narrow in front and supposedly lowers a bit. I have lowered the front and the back of the bike. I guess I'm wondering is the fuel management the answer, or should I save that money and go right for an Arnott system? Or would that even lower me enough? I don't know. Thanks for all your help.
Not sure why you should be burnt high on the leg unless it's front the rear right downpipe when you "walk" the bike around. If so I think True Duals might be an idea.
