My 05 r.k. developed a bad rattle at idle, when I put my foot on the shifter it stops. It seems like there is some slop in the shaft that the shifter clamps to. I do have the extended shifter by kuryakyn on the bike so im not sure if the extra leverage due to the longer shifter is the culprit or not. Is there a bushing where the shaft goes through or something in their that is bad? I look in my service manual and dont see anything. I never noticed this sound until recently. Anyone else had this problem? The shifter is tight, and the arm on the back side of the shaft is tight also. Thanks for any advice.
Do you still have the original linkage? That 20 dollar item wears out. The forward ball-in-socket wears due to usage and vibration......mine fell apart in Yellowstone Park.....in the rain, of course. Zipties saved the day.
This might be your problem.......go inspect. Like I said, you can replace the entire linkage with an original POS from HD for 20 bucks, or go to the stainless steel heim-jointed accessory for 160.00 and NEVER have the same woe.
If this isn't the source, then it is probably in the splined shifter shaft area. I believe I saw a post on the issue recently......do a search and I bet you find help there.
Gotta make sure that the inner shift arm is pushed snug against the rubber spacer when you tighten it. If you still get the vibration the shaft splines may be worn & the shaft will need replacing.
I do still have original linkage, I thought the inner shift arm could only go on so far so the bolt could go through the grove in the shaft? I guess I have never had it off so I could be wrong. I will give it a shot. Does anyone kow if there are bushings inside where it goes through the case?
Well maybe its just do to the extended length of the shifter then, thanks alot. Its a Harley, If I didnt like rattles and odd noises I guess I would be riding a goldwing.
